In winter the foliage of Trachelospermum jasminoides (star jasmine) responds to the colder conditions by the evergreen leaves turning deep red. This vigorous, twining woody climber has clusters of fragrant white flowers in the summer and requires a sheltered location.

In the garden of a friend their Clematis armandi (Armand clematis) has created swags of flowers through the trees. This is a vigorous evergreen climber with dark glossy green trifoliate leaves and the flowers have a wonderful almond-scent on a warm day.

The native Hedera helix (common ivy, English ivy) is a self-clinging climber in the juvenile form but as a mature plant it produces bushy, non-clinging branches with diamond-shaped leaves. In this adult form it has small, nectar-rich, greenish-yellow flowers followed by black berries in winter. The form Hedera helix f. poetarum 'Poetica Arborea' is an adult plant and forms an evergreen shrub with yellow berries.

The Australian native Hardenbergia violacea (vine lilac, Australian lilac, Australian sarsparilla, coral pea) can be grown in Britain in a warm or unheated conservatory. This evergreen climber has twining stems up to 2m long and in late winter is covered in purple, or occasionally pink or white, flowers. Here it was growing in the beautifully restored, heated glasshouse of Myddleton House, Enfield, UK.

The Australian twining or sprawling evergreen shrub Hibbertia scandens (gold guinea plant, snake climber) has stems over 3m long, with glossy leaves and solitary yellow flowers. The plant is tender and only hardy down to 5°C (41°F) so here it is growing in the glasshouse corridor of the Cambridge Botanic Gardens, UK. In warmer climates this plant makes a suitable ground cover plant or a climber for wire fences and trelisses. It will grow in sun or partial shade and will cope with a sandy soil.

A colleague and I were surveying the green campus at Writtle University College, Essex, and we found this unusual climber growing on a shaded wall of the main building. After some searching we found it was Ercilla volubilis, a self-clinging climber from Chile, it produces a dense mass of evergreen leafy stems, up to 6m high. The flowers are small, pinkish white, borne in dense, stalkless spikes.

In the warmth of Seville, Spain, the vigorous, evergreen climber Solandra grandiflora (chalice vine, cup of gold) produces large, yellow flowers. This plant is a native of the West Indies and tropical America.
