He hadn’t been the same for a long time. The Newt they knew, he was gone long ago, and now Tina paces here at the side of his bed, the poisonous bite already seeping through his bloodstream and killing him slowly. St. Mungo’s had already said they could do nothing for him, that it was too far gone to be stopped now.
“Newt, I love you, you know that.”
He smiles, though it’s more of a grimace at this point. “I know.”
“And I don’t—I don’t see why they won’t do anything. There must be something they can do, something they can use, right? Some potion or spell or… or something?”
Newt shakes his head once, a slow movement that only furthers to drain the color from his face. “There’s nothing.”
“But you had a whole notebook. Something must be in it.”
Newt’s eyes shut. “There’s nothing, Tina. I was foolish. This is what I get.”
Her lower lip wobbles, just the slightest. She doesn’t, after all, have time to cry yet, not while he’s still alive in this hospital room for a few more seconds. “The war may have taken her, but you survived it, Newt. You don’t have to let yourself die.”
“It’s my time.”
“Newt,” she mumbles, grabbing his hand, “please don’t do this. She’d want you to live.”
Newt’s hand is cold and heavy in hers.
“Is it so bad if I join her again?”
She squeezes his fingers, nodding. “Yes. Yes, it’s very bad if you do. We need you here, Newt. Queenie and I need you. Jacob needs you. Pickett needs you.”
A shaky breath passes between Newt’s lips. “Tina, the guilt game won’t stop the creature’s poison.”
“I need you, Newt.” The words are so intense, so honest, so vulnerable, that Tina’s cheeks redden. “I need you.”
He opens his eyes now, peers up at her from where he lies, face nearly as white as the linens tucked around him, breaths shallower with each passing second. “You’ll be fine, Tina. You have Queenie, and a job. You can do this without me.”
“But I don’t want to.”
“Tina, please.”
She can hear the effort he puts into talking and the labored breaths rattling in his chest. “Newt, she loved you so much. You can’t just let this all go because you lost her.”
Newt chuckles once, a quiet sound, and his mouth twitches up – the first sign of a genuine smile she’s seen in fifteen years. “I’ve missed her so much.”
“Newt, don’t give up. Please.” Her voice is dripping with desperation, so thick with terror she fears Newt will worry for her in what may be his final moments.
“You know, I always told her I’d wait for her.” He laughs once again. “I never imagined she’d be waiting on me somewhere.”
“Newt.” Tina whimpers, heart shattering. She knows in the very depths of her heart that Newt’s giving up, that this reminiscence he refused to speak of before is the sign, the proof that he’s finally letting go.
“She was so beautiful, Tina. So lovely. I could never have deserved her.” Tears well up in his eyes. “I should have protected her. I should have kept her away from them.”
Tina shakes her head, taking a seat on the edge of the bed, fingernails digging into Newt’s palm. “It wasn’t your fault.”
“I could have stopped it.” He pauses and Tina’s heart nearly does the same until he takes another wheezing breath. “She was always like that, you know. Unafraid of harm. I would warn her time again to stay away from the nundu habitats, but she was friendly with them within days. And she loved to have tea with the niffler, you know. I’m not sure how she managed to make him sit quiet for so long, but they would sit and gossip. About me, I’m sure.” He chuckles once more. “Do you know that she would choreograph her own dances? And that she loved to listen to the records early in the morning while I cooked?” He sighs, eyes shut, grip loosening. “Merlin, I loved her, Tina. Still do. It’s the one good thing about this: I get to see her again.”
Tina wants to protest, to tell him that there’s nothing good about this, but she knows it will do nothing to change his mind. “She loved you too, Newt. So much.” She wipes at her eyes with her free hand. “She loved you.”
His voice is weak now, so soft Tina can hardly hear it. “I’ve missed her more than myself.”
“What do you mean?” She fights to keep her words from wobbling.
“I lost myself the day we heard. I know you noticed.” He forces his eyes open, an obvious struggle he barely wins. “You were nearly as bothersome as my mother after.”
“I couldn’t have you hurting.”
“No, I suppose you couldn’t.” Newt sighs, eyes closing, grip hardly noticeable anymore.
Tina’s frame shakes as tears finally break into her eyes and escape onto her cheeks. “Newt, I love you. I love you so much.”
“She was so wonderful, Tina. So wonderful.”
“I’m going to miss you.” She knows he can’t hear, that whatever’s happening has stolen him from her, stolen him from this very realm.
“She’s so beautiful, Tina.” He breathes out, a contented smile on his face. “I can hear her.”
“Don’t leave, Newt. Please.” Tina chokes on the words.
“I’ve missed her smile.” He murmurs, the words slurring together.
Tina wipes at her eyes, hand tight around Newt’s hand. “Newt. Newt, please. Please.” Her voice breaks as Newt takes a deep breath. “Newt, please don’t leave me.” These words are useless, and she only has one chance left, so she forces her voice to steady, her breathing to calm for a moment, just long enough for her to remind Newt one final time. “I love you, Newt. I love you.”
Newt’s next words are unintelligible, but Tina knows it’s about you. It’s all about you now, as it should be.
Newt’s chest stops, shuddering once, twice, then sinking.
“Newt? Newt, please, please don’t be gone. I need you. Merlin’s beard, Newt, please. Please.” Her voice shakes and cracks and her tears are relentless now as they blur her vision. “Newt. Newt!” She screams his name over and over and over again, but she’s too late.
The door slams open. Feet rush in, footsteps pounding over the clean tiles that smell too strongly of bleach. Nurses in blindingly white scrubs rush to his bed as a greying doctor gently pushes her aside. The noise in the room grows louder and louder with unfamiliar voices, and Tina shuts down, shuffling away from Newt’s side, wiping tears from her eyes but still clinging to his hand as well as she can with the people crowding around him.
Then she loses his grip, loses Newt. She yells for him when his limp hand thumps against the mattress as a nurse with freezing hands grabs her wrist, forcing her to let go and leave the room. “Come on, honey. There’s nothing more here for you.”
The nurse says it in the softest voice possible, but the pity sickens Tina; it’s only further proof that this is the end, that Newt’s finally gone.
“Newt.” She sobs, heart breaking like it hadn’t already been destroyed when they told her the diagnosis. “Newt, I love you. I love you.” She sobs over and over, letting the nurse lead her through the maze of the wing and into a separate room, sitting her on a spare bed.
“Take your time in here, honey. When you’re better, you should head to the front desk.” The nurse’s gaze lingers on Tina’s tears. “Was he a husband?”
Tina hesitates, then nods. “Yes. Yes, he was. To the very end.”
The nurse nods too, eyes wide and sad. “I’m sorry for your loss.”
“He wasn’t my husband.”
“Oh?”
“He was someone else’s but he—but he lost her a long time ago. I think… I think he’s back with her now. I hope he is, at least.” She wipes at another tear. “He deserves to be happy.”
The nurse reaches out, rubbing Tina’s bicep. “With such a good friend, I’m sure he was.”
No, no he wasn’t. He couldn’t be, everyone knew that. He could be happy, but not fully, not without you at his side smiling up at him. There was a reason he never left his wallet behind, and it wasn’t for the money.
No, it was for the one picture of the two of you together, noses nearly touching, hands wrapped around one another as a slow tune played in the background, so lost in one another that no one else existed until Queenie took the picture, and you opened your eyes and began to laugh at the flash. The picture is faded, crinkled from being pulled out of its place between dollar bills, top corners worn from Newt’s fingertips.
No, Newt wasn’t happy until tonight. There is no doubt in Tina’s mind about that.
She shuts her eyes, laying down on the bed the nurse brought her to, tears still breaking past her barriers and dripping onto the white sheets.
She falls asleep and dreams of Newt waving goodbye, walking hand-in-hand away with you, a giant smile plastered on his face.
