I absolutely loved this newest installment in the Evander Mills series! Mirage City enters new territory, Los Angeles, and highlights new facets of queer history. I was fascinated by everything I learned about the Mattachine Society and the queer motorcycle clubs of the time. Most of all, I loved the character work in this book. Andy has grown a great deal in the year since he was outed and forced to leave the police, but he still questions his worthiness when showered with the love of his friends at the Ruby and his boyfriend, Gene. His changes are put even more in focus when he revisits Los Angeles and sees his mother again. She questions his lack of a love life and he wonders if he should come out or maintain the distance in their relationship. His worries are very relatable and shed even more light on his character. But no matter what trials he encounters while working the case, Andy remains true to himself and won't leave until he's made sure all the missing persons are safe and accounted for. Like in San Francisco, he finds allies to support him and feels welcomed into the queer community in Los Angeles. Overall, an exciting and sometimes chilling mystery filled with amazing characters, historical details, and queer love.
