1. Different types of German traffic fines

Fines are divided into two categories:

- On-the-spot reprimand - (Verwarnungsgeld)

- (Bußgeldbescheid) - Fine that can be paid late

Drivers may refuse to pay an on-the-spot fine (Verwarnungsgeld), but Bußgeldbescheidis riskier because Verwarnungsgeld has no bearing on how an insurance claim is settled. The fact that you paid a Bußgeldbescheid afterwards could be used as proof that you were at fault.

2. System of Traffic Points

The traffic point system is used in Germany to punish traffic violators (Flensburger Konto).

The severity of the traffic violation determines how many points are added. Some serious offences, such as fleeing the scene of an accident, might result in three Flensburg points.

A driver will receive a warning and information about the points system after accumulating four to five points. When a motorist receives six to seven points, he or she must attend two 90-minute lectures within three months of being notified. A driver's licence is revoked if he or she has eight or more points on their record. A driver's record will be marked with points for at least 2.5 years. Serious offences can stay on a person's record for up to ten years.

3. Foreigners' Traffic Fines

Non-EU citizens living in Germany or the EU region with the intention of staying longer are treated the same as local citizens and must pay the same punishment for traffic violations. When a person who is not a citizen of the EU region drives across German territory and commits a traffic crime, he or she will pay a greater fine because the traffic point system does not apply to them.

4. The Value of the Fine

The amount of the fine is determined by the seriousness of the offence. For example, speeding up to 10 km/h outside of town/city boundaries pays 10 euros, whereas speeding up to 10 km/h inside city limits costs 15 euros.

5. It's all right for cyclists.

In the event of a traffic violation, cyclists must also pay fines. If a cyclist has a driver's license, he or she may be penalized in the Flensburg system as well. Even if riding during the day, if a bicycle does not have function lights, the owner must pay a fine of 25 Euros. A red-light violation costs 60 euros, and the offender will receive a point in Flensburg if he or she also has a driver's license. Cycling while inebriated is also illegal. Cycling with a helmet is advised but not required.

6. Driving ban

Some offences, such as drunk driving, might result in a driving prohibition. The Flensburg point system is frequently combined with a driving prohibition. A speeding violation of 31-40 km/h within city boundaries can result in a one-month driving prohibition, two points on the Flensburg system, and a maximum fine of 160 euros.

7. Pedestrians are encouraged to use the area.
