Euonymus europaeus ‘Miss Pinkie’ (Syn. E. hamiltonianus ’Miss Pinkie) (Pink European Spindle) and today’s #oneadayplant . There is an ever increasing number of species and varieties available of what we used to just call ‘Spindle trees/bushes’. Most are noted for good autumn colour, dense, bushy shape and interesting and attractive seed pods (like those pictured). Miss Pinkie has always seemed more comfortable growing as a dwarf tree rather than shrub, but I’m sure could be trained either way easily enough (1.8m (6’) tall by 1.5m (5’) wide in 10-15 years). . Also of note in these larger, deciduous Euonymus is the common quality of having winged growths on the branches as they age. This is most apparent on the species E. alatus. It is a lovely species, but not much of a seed pod to look at. Miss Pinkie has a pinkier seed pot than most species and varieties. These pods hold the glossy orange-red fruit (I’m sure these used to be called ‘arils’ like the seeds in Taxus (Yew)). Please note that the fruit of Euonymus are poisonous and it is sensible to avoid ingesting any part of a Euonymus plant. Pretty, but dangerous. . Autumn colour is intense orange, red, purple on most Spindle. Miss Pinkie perhaps tends more towards Yellow, Orange and Red. Still well worth it on a large plant as very attractive. Fruiting is more abundant some years than others, but always there and generally fairly profuse. Flowers are found in spring. They are small, yellow and pretty uneventful. . Easy to grow so long as not waterlogged.
