EU members’ ambassadors agreed to call on the Commission to start the process of examining EU membership applications of Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova. Member states should also formally confirm this decision later this week (summit in Paris on March 10-11).
Even if every EU instiution agrees to start the process ASAP, I doubt the three countries will see full memebrship in this decade - let’s not forget about the current candidates:
- Albania: applied for membership in 2009, application approved in 2020. Negotiations are open, screening process stalled.
- North Macedonia: applied for membership in 2004, application approved in 2020. Negotiations are open, screening process stalled.
- Montenegro: applied for membership in 2008, application approved in 2010. Negotiations are open, screening complete, 9% chapters* closed.
- Serbia: applied for membership in 2009, application approved in 2012. Negotiations are open, screening complete, 6% chapters* closed.
- Turkey: applied for membership (of the then European Economic Community) in 1987, application approved in 2004. Negotiations are stalled, screening complete, 3% chapters* closed.
- Bosnia and Herzegovina is currently stuck as potential candidate
It’s a lengthy process to join the bloc and I doubt they will accommodate the new applicants in any way, even (or especially) not in a crisis of this proportions. Maybe the EU will grant them sooner the first package of pre-accession aid, but when it comes down to the Acquis, Brussels won't budge.
