I writes in urges. Sometimes someone can say to me "okay, go, write" and I can get something out, but most of the time it's this overwhelming compulsion and I just can't do anything about it. It's kinda silly, I have tons of notebooks next to my bed and my notes in school are intermittently interrupted by my own personal-y writing. It works differently with different mediums thought, with poetry for me there's a lot of focus on molding it and carving it and having it not only have content that I want but that the words themselves taste right and the shape is right. With fiction it feels more...linear? With memoir it's like dipping my toe into a pool and I have to get comfortable with the temperature before swimming. With critical stuff I dunno usually I'm angry about something before I start writing that. And I actually had to do a writer's statement recently about why I write and ah. I don't like to write to force the reader to have a specific reaction, I don't like writing to make the reader do something. I like for the piece to exist happily on its own and when a reader does encounter it, I don't want any specific reaction, I just want there to be some sort of meaningful reaction.
