After today's unprecedented action in Seattle, let's learn a new hashtag: #blacklivesmatterinschools
ASIAN AMERICAN STUDIES NOW ------------- Come voice your SUPPORT for our resolution for an Asian American Studies MAJOR at the Student Assembly meeting TODAY at 4:45 PM in the Willard Straight Hall Memorial Room. We'll have yellow ribbon you can tie on your arm or wrist to show your support! Founded in 1987, the Cornell Asian American Studies Program was the first of its kind in the Ivy League. However, since its creation and despite a growing demand and interest in Asian American Studies in recent years, the Program has remained under-resourced and understaffed as a program that has one of the smallest operating budgets in the College of Arts and Sciences. In this light, we echo the Fall 2015 demands of Black Students United at Cornell University to create a plan for implementing an Asian American Studies major, a Latino Studies major, and an American Indian Studies major by the end of 2016. We call for the establishment of an Asian American Studies Major at Cornell University. BECAUSE THIS IS ABOUT: - INTERDISCIPLINARY SCHOLARSHIP because Asian American Studies uses the frameworks of Anthropology, Sociology, History, English and so many other subjects to allow us to understand how societal forces shape the institutions and systems that surround us at the local, national, and global levels. - REPRESENTATION because Asian American Studies is the only place the Asian diaspora can see themselves fully represented in the academic sphere. - EXPRESSION because Asian American Studies is an articulation of the thoughts, experiences, and dynamics of Asian America. - NECESSITY because the pursuit of Asian American Studies is a crucial player in the strengthening of a more inclusive campus and society. - RELEVANCE because Asian American Studies gives students the tools, frameworks, and vocabulary to understand the past, present, and futures in which we live.
