a part of tom cruise's performance in this movie that i really enjoyed was his ability to cry without making any indication of it in his expression. it puts ethan emotionally in sync with the pace of the film - no slowing down, no stopping, no matter how bad it gets you have to keep moving. and even though there's no time to process any of what's happening, ethan can't help but feel all of it. it gives ethan this emotional feel of someone who has already been pushed past their breaking point and is continuing to go on anyway because he has to. it's never been made more apparent that ethan's body is treated like a piece of equipment that unfortunately has a human soul trapped inside of it
There are two examples of cut scenes from Fallout and DR that I wish theyād kept in/incorporated somehow, because they both offer a glimpse into how Ethan behaves between missions. The first one is him going into hiding after Kashmir to avoid Sloane. He does this as a negotiation tactic to force her to hand over Lane to MI6 in order to free Ilsa. The second one is at the beginning of Dead Reckoning, where heās offered multiple missions by Kittridge and refuses all of them, evading the IMF and staying under the radar. You watch him walk through public streets alone, off-balance and separate from the rest of the world, until eventually the movie opens with Kittridge placing a bounty on Ilsaās head to flush Ethan out of hiding.
And I think whatās interesting is that in both of these instances, Ethan isnāt forced into hiding (like he is in Rogue Nation or Ghost Protocol), he is choosing to hide as a form of leverage. It shows a much more calculated and angry version of Ethan, one that is actively hostile to the IMF, working for his own interests as opposed to āthe greater good.ā We usually see him in high-pressure situations where heās not in control and trying desperately to solve a series of increasingly insane and dangerous problems. But these two examples show the opposite - he is very calculated and slow moving. This is how Ethan behaves when heĀ isĀ in control, and itās an inversion of the panicked, rushed, lightning-fast way he behaves during missions.Ā
It also offers additional texture to the lonesome and empty way we see him act between missions, where heās literally sleeping in abandoned buildings and isolating himself from the world lol. It gives those at-rest periods more of an edge. In those moments, heĀ isĀ still working, but in a āselfishā way, using his own skills and reputation to get what he wants (eg protecting Ilsa). And imo it gives Ethan more agency in his life and helps inform how he relates to his own desires. His self-isolation acts as both a passive and active form of protection - he hides because he knows that getting close to people puts them in harms way, and he also hides as a bargaining chip for his friendsā lives. It gives you the impression that Ethan is aware of his own value as an agent, and deploys that value for political/strategic means. And for me at least it demonstrates a more cold and shrewd side of Ethan, where he can exert his will and behave in ways that are more hidden or subtle. People often joke about him being dog-coded, being a sad wet puppy, etc etc, and while all of those are definitely true lol, I like this much more deliberate and calculated side of him, where he has more control over his own actions when he isnāt being forced to just gut-react to everything. Heās great in a crisis, but when heās not in a crisis, he is very, very still
Thereās a degree to which the stunts in mission impossible movies are interchangeable, like you could swap around their order between films and I donāt think it would disrupt the narrative too much. Ethan hanging off a plane in the opening scene of Rogue Nation could easily go in another film for example. But the Sevastopol sequence feels like it can only ever be in Final Reckoning because it represents the culmination of all of Ethanās guilts and fears and self-loathing. A sunken submarine at the bottom of the ocean is the physical embodiment of his mind state - he is trapped entirely alone with his guilt, haunted by the people he feels responsible for killing, slowly drowning. He escapes the submarine but only through excruciating pain and death, naked and alone. And I think Ethan believes he deserves it, that itās some penance to pay. I remember McQuarrie saying in the Empire spoilercast for FR that originally the scene of Ethan dying in the arctic was intercut with Luther dying, so that āas Ethan dies heās thinking of the death of his friendā and I think that further drives home the fact that Ethan feels he has to die in order to make up for everyone he loves dying. Like Briggs said to Ethan, who is openly weeping during their conversation: āSorry about your friend. Then again, youāre used to losing them.ā

itās awesome that ethan says āthey kidnapped my wife, stealing the rabbits foot was the only way i could get her backā in tfr because like obviously itās just an exposition line and the audience is not expected to know who julia is, so if he just said her name it would defeat the purpose of it being an expository line. but characterologically the fact that he calls her my wife is great because it means heās 1) still married to her in his own brain 2) suuuuuuper not over it even a little bit
very thankful for ghost protocol giving us ethan making an insanely cheesy and cringe speech about teamwork and friendship while theyāre all sitting around drinking together after the mission. another instance of him being way too earnest and not realising heās embarrassing everyone by talking at length about how thankful he is to have a team that works this well together. can you imagine the type of speech he gave at his own engagement partyĀ
