Your Changing Celestial Body and You!, an MCU headcanon/fanon welding
This should answer (with fanon) Why the Nova Force was created, why there are so few Nova Force users in the MCU VS the Comics, why Ego called himself a Celestial when he's just a parasitic planet, and a fun solution to the "Kill a Planet and it's population to keep the Universe Alive" problem.
(...this is me mashing my hands in the sandbox and trying to knit the mentions of Celestials of the MCU together into a coherent myth arc. Because I really did like Eternals but they were so...off compared to the other Cosmic Marvel movies. Hope you like it.)
General spoilers for Eternals, GOTG1 and 2, and Captain Marvel under the cut.
We're going to go over some differences between the comics continuity and the film continuity, but sometimes they both overlap and influence each other.
In Comics 616, the Nova Force is created and distributed by the Xandarian Worldmind. The Corps are essentially one-to-two man superhero groups that patrol and protect the Galaxy from large threats. There are many of them, with different helmets and ranks.
In MCU 616 (19999), there’s only one reference to the Nova Force, which is when the ships charge and link up a blockade in GOTG Vol 1. No one close to the Comics 616 level power ever shows up with the Novas. The helmets show up, but they seem to be part of the uniform.
The Xandarian Worldmind in 616 seems close in concept to the Kree Supreme Intelligence from Captain Marvel 19999. I don’t like repeats. So instead, the Nova Force is grandfathered in from the Celestials and Eternals.
Basically an Eternal (*checks Wiki*…let’s go with the Interloper) discovered their real purpose and rejected it. They didn’t want to protect just one planet that held a growing Celestial, they wanted to protect all planets and people. They create the Nova Corp., asking space-faring civilizations to join together, to protect and defend each other from threats that a single planet can't handle.
Arishem goes “hmm,” and allows it, but refuses to continue fixing the Eternal, causing them to die. At the Eternal’s request, the Nova Corp took their bones/metal remains and mixed them into metal to augment their tech. When they take a vow to protect all sentient life, what’s left of the Eternal connects them to the Nova Force/Cosmic Energy and they get superpowers. But that was also eons ago, and the Nova Force is tricky and does not bless everyone with superpowers. They’re kept as an emergency reserve, and are close in power level to Captain Marvel.
The Celestials know that destroying a planet with an entire sentient species for a new Celestial is not ideal. So they’ve been experimenting in other reproductive methods. One of those was Ego, the Living Planet. Which is why he was called a Celestial in Vol 2 – he’s a creation of the Celestials that’s “close enough”.
If Eternals are robots created to help with a specific task, then Ego is an attempt at cloning a person. Ego did not completely work as intended. He can’t utilize cosmic energy like they do – he can only build himself up, he can’t create stars or galaxies, can’t create life by himself.
Ego’s his drive to reproduce and seed himself over the universe did have a by-product. His children, who are compatible with cosmic energy. Peter Quill got the ability to create/manipulate matter because he was able to grow to adulthood.
So. If Quill ever gets overloaded with Celestial energy, it's a high chance he's going to fully "evolve" into a Celestial near-instantaneously.
(Mantis and any other kids that Ego didn't kill can also "evolve", but the process would take a few hundred years at least. Peter's exposure to the Infinity Stone of Power reduced that time for Peter.)
His memories and traits are still there, just muted, like his human life was a dream. Now that Star-Lord is a Celestial, he fills the missing spot that Tiamut of Earth was going to have in creating galaxies. He also holds the keys to the Nova Force – he will judge the Nova Force recruits and gift them powers – and also opinions on their taste in music.
In one million years, Star-Lord and the other Celestials can seek out a descendant of Ego and pull them upward into becoming a Celestial, fixing the problem of killing a civilization in order for the universe to continue. If they run out of kids, they can make another Living Planet and do better this time.
