Answering this for our boy Oliver, because I’m working on Ch. 10 which is all about him!
Does your OC look up to anyone? If so, who?
Captain Hollowar. His father was far too preoccupied with the Rothe legacy to be anything close to an adequate parent, and Oliver noticed his cruelty at a young age when it was directed towards his mother. His mother eventually couldn’t handle the stress of being a Rothe (for reasons we will get into later) and became a drunk who barely knew she had a son.
So even though Oliver really didn’t want to join the guard, it was the best thing for him. With Hollowar as his mentor he found structure and discipline, two things he was lacking. In addition to that, Hollowar was extremely fond of him and her positive reinforcement and constant praising filled the void Mara had left. Unfortunately, that is also what led to his considerably large ego. He considers Hollowar to be the closest thing to a real parent he’s ever had, and he’s been repressing the thought that she no longer wants anything to do with him.
What would your OC say to their past self?
I mean, this is pretty predictable: He would tell himself to run away with Mara instead of becoming the type of person he hates.
