in regards to [[that post about AAVE]], which is a good post and also not my area, which is why i don’t want to derail it...

so about the OP... spanish is my area, i’ve been learning it for about 35yrs but i’m not a native speaker, so... if any hispanohablantes want to jump in and add or correct, pues adelante 

spanish-speakers do tend to realise that there are dialects of spanish. 

in my experience, non-spanish-speakers tend to be shocked when they first find out just how much variety there is among dialects of spanish.

you also get common misconceptions, some of which i feel like have some racism/classism in common with the misconceptions about AAVE. 

i’m going to just mention some things that i’ve heard from students. 

spanglish is bad (i’m not a linguist but as far as i understand, creole languages occur naturally any time you have people living in one language and thinking in another, and/or you have large groups of bilinguals interacting. there is nothing wrong with this.)

caribbean dialects are bad/lazy/ghetto because people don’t pronounce certain letters near the ends of words. (note: the caribbean includes a lot of afrolatinos.)

their friends’ spanish is ghetto basically because it was not the same as the spanish that the student learned in school

the spanish of spain is superior to the spanish(es) of latin america. (omg. have you HEARD spaniards?! their spanish is hard and sharp and ugly [but-in-a-good-way]. it’s like how new yorkers talk english. i love it. but it’s not conventionally beautiful! i read that spanish spoken in spain actually became slightly more “nice” thanks to an influx of latinamerican immigrants in the early 2000s)

people putting down their own dialect. so this happens in english when a student speaks in a very “country” way, and they worry they won’t be able to learn spanish when they “can’t hardly speak english” and probably some people worry the same because of what they’ve been made to feel about AAVE... but i’ve also heard spanish-speakers put down their own regional variety of spanish, because enough people had told them it wasn’t as good or “proper” as some other. 

i heard from heritage speaker students about gringo spanish teachers (usually in high school) trying to enforce only one type of spanish and saying that words they hadn’t heard of weren’t real. it’s one thing if native speakers do this with each other (as descriptivist i still disagree, because spanish is an international language that belongs to the people of 20-some countries, not just those of one country... but as a gringa it’s not really my place to get into this) but i feel like it’s especially bigoted behaviour if gringos do this to heritage speakers. it’s very simple to just go to the http://www.rae.es/ (the now-internationalised, ie: not just spain, highest authority on what is officially part of the spanish language) and/or http://www.tubabel.com/ (like urbandictionary but in spanish) or even just google, and find out that something is (historically, officially, or by current use) a real word. teachers should be ready to learn something, too.
