i often find myself travelling back to the past in my mind. i feel that during periods of crisis (breakups, wars, climate change, unaffordable housing, you name it!) nostalgia becomes the predominant feeling to which we turn. we seek comfort in the past because our present sometimes is unbearable. the past becomes a kind of shelter because is familiar and what's familiar to us give us a sense of security. nostalgia is the feeling that helps us escape from that reality. what is familiar is no longer a threat, it doesn't confuse us or generate anxiety like change (a.k.a crisis) does. in this sense, nostalgia is a natural response of self-care and self-preservation. that is why we keep watching our comfort series or listen to that music to that makes us connect with simpler times or we log in to tumblr again after 10 years. sometimes we just need to escape and i think that's ok.
