How am I supposed to know? Something out there doesn't like innocent children would be my guess. Could've attacked anywhere and they chose the school.
While I'm sure I would've saved some trauma if I was there with a weapon, would you blame yourself for the actions of monsters? There are plenty of other teachers who 'let it happen' too. If you can think of a way I could've stopped it then I might just take some of that blame.
