If you don’t mind me asking, what’s the context behind the gator? Is she being raised as an education animal, a personal pet or something else? She’s cute and seems to be in a pretty nice setup but I get alarmed when I see animals like that in private ownership, I’m not going to lie. I’d like more info though before I formulate any opinions either way though.
she’s being used for education/research by someone who knows their stuff and has done this three or four times before. the gator stays at the school until they hit a certain size (a few feet long) and then they go back to a zoo.
Okay but I’m super invested in these baby crabs now. Are they doing alright? Did anyone put pants on and keep them?
They’re doing okay! ♥ The one little shell baby is still trying to figure things out - he got in another too-big shell last night & fell off the bridge, so he swam out of that shell. Last I saw him today, he’s been hanging out on the bridge again, still shell-less. Fingers crossed he can figure this out, I’m trying to give him some space and not bug him too much. But I have been trying to pick some of the other too-big shells out to help lessen the challenge. I just don’t know that there’s anything else I can do, frustrating as that is.Â
There’s around 13 megalopa still that I’ve been able to count for sure! Most are just hanging around in the tote lately & not looking at shells much. And I still have 6 late bloomers who are in the jar, though I’m hoping they’ll finally change in the next couple days so I can retire that jar. I’ll still be raising some brine shrimp so that I can add them to the megalopa tote in case they are still eating them (impossible to tell, sigh), but that’ll be it for the jar set up then.Â

I really want to know how you trained this cue.
This is a really easy one to train! What I did was used clam meat- a really smelly, conveniently small-sized treat- and touched her nose while holding the clam on some tongs. When she opened her mouth, I popped the clam in, but only when I was touching her nose. As we kept working, I took longer to give her the reward. When we reinforce this during our training sessions, I maintain a delayed reward of a few seconds- long enough for me to shine a small flashlight in her mouth (like the vet does when he’s checking her teeth and the roof of her mouth). It’s very simple conditioning!
My vet has said multiple times she’s his favorite lizard patient. Between being ok with mouth checks (I got the idea from people who work with alligators at zoos), a harness, and handling, she’s pretty much the ideal.
Now if only she could stop untying his shoelaces...
Just out of curiosity, does the gene that gives American curl cats their curl cause any problems like the Scottish folds have?
The thing about American Curl cats is that there aren’t a whole lot of them in Australia, so I don’t have any clinical experience with them, but it does appear to be an entirely different mutation and I’m not currently aware of any similar issues with it.

So I’m curious, why does Sunny have blue tape on the front of his viv? Is it some kind of visual barrier?
Yes.
Sunny doesn’t understand transparency, and so to help him know that he can’t go through the doors, I put tape on them.
It isn’t as important now as it was in the beginning, when through a combination of discomfort from the meds, discomfort from the infections, and just plain getting used to a new home, he was very restless and glass-surfed almost constantly.
These days, he’s much like any other snake, and spends most of his time curled up in his hide.
Have you considered doing saiga antelope for a weird biology post? They could be fun.
I have, actually! gotta love an antelope that looks like it has some elephant in its ancestry.
Here’s some of my pets to make your day better!
So beautiful!! Scary yet friendly looking buggos (what are they? what do they feel like?) ❤️ you better watch out, I think your dragon is on fire! P.s. those geck feet look sticky @erysian
