Hello! I hear an awful lot about TNR programs for cat colonies, but is this kind of program in place for wild horses (in the USA or elsewhere)? I know wild horses can be a big problem sometimes and their often just caught and sold but they don't really belong here in North America any more than fetal cats do.

The traditional method of rounding up wild horses to be sold is still used today for BLM mustangs and burros, as well as the Virginia half of the Assateague island herd. Since 1988, the Maryland side of Assateague Island has controlled the population of the ponies by way of a dart gun vaccination containing a non-hormone treatment, known as PZP, that blocks fertilization. This vaccine lasts for about a year. There is also a vaccine that blocks the hormone GnRH, called GonaCon. One dose of the GonaCon vaccine is marginally effective for 1-2 years, but if a mare receives a second dose, she can be infertile for 4 or more years. This vaccination practice is a non-invasive and virtually harmless way to control the population. It has more recently been tried on wild mustangs and burros with much success. However, because it must be regularly re-applied it is unlike TNR. Studies done on BLM mutangs have shown that castration of stallions is actually less effective (in terms of both reduction in herd numbers and cost) than the vaccination sterilization of mares, so TNR wouldn’t really even be that effective in horses.
The other key difference between cat colonies and horse herds is that a horse is lucky to carry one foal to term each year, and the foal requires at least 2-3 years to become fertile and successfully carry a foal. Meanwhile, cats produce 3-6 kittens per litter on average, can produce 3-4 litters per year, and kittens take only 5-6 months to become fertile. That is why permanent sterilization is more important in cats.

I was playing Xbox online with someone from Hawai'i last week and they stepped outside for a smoke between rounds and didn't mute their mic and I could hear so many frogs singing and it was SO MAGICAL. I can't stop thinking about it. I live in Canada so it's very anti-frog weather here, and normally I only hear/see a couple a year anyway due to my location. I can't wait to play with Hawai'i person again just to hear more signing frogs.

Hi! So last night we managed to catch a stray kitten and we are going to take it to a shelter but can't until tomorrow, any hot tips on how to make it as comfortable as possible? We gave it water, food, a litter box and our cat carrier with a blanket for a bed and it's living in our spare bathroom right now. It's -21°C (-5.8°F) outside right now and we just couldn't let the poor thing stay outside in this weather once we noticed it hanging around the house.

Do you have any tips for helping a cat learn to tolerate tooth brushing? My cat is 6 and I've never brushed her teeth, but I do use a vet-recommended water additive. My vet didn't seem very hopeful that she would take to brushing and to be honest I have tried yet.
Honestly, I can’t get mine to tolerate it. I could force the issue, but doing so daily would likely damage our relationship and I don’t want to do that.
You don’t have to open the cat’s mouth to clean teeth, particularly the large teeth at the back of the upper jaw, where problems often occur, if the cat will let you slip something under the lip, which may be more comfortable. Convincing them to just chew the toothbrush can be helpful too, at least to start.
The trick for any training is to start with the smallest possible step, and make it positive. You can build up from there.
Cats being cat’s though, get their own dental weirdness that may happen regardless of how much dental care they get, so regular checkups are still very important.
