A European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) in Surrey, England

I went for a walk late on the nght at the Waipiata pub, to see if their were any insects about. I could hear cat kibble being eaten, which was odd because the pub cat was asleep in a pot plant. Instead, I found two of these guys.

Hedgehogs were introduced to Aotearoa in the late nineteenth century, and like every other mammal introduced to the islands promptly became an ecological nightmare. By the 1920s a bounty was already being offered for them, and the 1950s they were so widespread they were even spotted climbing glaciers.

They relish slugs and snails, which is one reason they were brought to the country, but they also compete with native bush birds and prey on rare insects, lizards, molluscs, and ground-nesting birds.

The 17 species of hedgehog are native to Africa, Asia, and Europe, and this species is native to Europe from Iberia to Scandenavia, and west to the British Isles. The population in the latter has crashed dramatically in recent decades, partly because badgers are now protected and are their main predator, and because suburban gardens are too well secured against any intruders, including creatures as small as hedgehogs.

Eaten and used as medicine for thousands of years.

Erinaceus

Dünyanın En Yaşlı Kirpisi Danimarka’da dünyanın en yaşlı kirpisi bulundu. 16 yaşında olan kirpi, daha önceki rekor sahibinden 7 yıl daha uzun yaşadı. Citizen-Science projesi çerçevesinde bulunan diğer bazı kirpilerin de uzun ömürlü olduğu görüldü. Erinaceus europaeus olarak adlandırılan Avrupa kirpisi, bahçelerde ve parklarda yasayarak, salyangoz, solucan ve çeşitli böceklerle besleniyor.…

Celem kolejnego finału było pozyskanie środków „dla wyrównania szans w leczeniu noworodków”. Od wczesnych godzin porannych wolontariusze rozlokowani w kilku punktach zbierali pieniądze do specjalnych puszek WOŚP, które bardzo szybko się zapełniały.

Po południu wszyscy przenieśli się na Targowisko Miejskie gdzie odbywała się “Letnia Zadyma w Środku Zimy“. Mimo, że śniegu nie było ujemna temperatura z wiatrem dało się odczuć – jak to klasyk powiada “Najgorszy jest wiatr”.

Na głównej scenie wystąpili: Erinaceus, The Colt’s, Capella Canta Brass, Klaudia Popielska i Adam Mieloch, The Shvagiers oraz Dj Ricken.

Mieszkańcy, którzy tego dnia odwiedzili targowisko mogli także zobaczyć samochód Tesla, żuka Drużyny Ż, pojazdy klubu Awangarda oraz białą londyńską taksówkę.

O godz. 20:00 podobnie jak w całej Polsce na niebo poszybowały fajerwerki, które zakończyły orkiestrowe granie tego dnia.
