One of my favourite reimagining is that of Needle Man. Originally, he was just a robot with needles. That's all. He was said to have a bit of a personality in the bio, but... we never see it in practice and he was only used once.

In my fan reimaging, Needle is reimagined as a goth punk girl robot who loves spike motiffs and secretly has a thing for needlepoint. She is artistic, a free spirit, a fencer (one of her big needles works like a sword/rapier), and she has a soft spot for unusual creatures like hedgehogs, scorpions, snakes and such. She can be a real firecracker at times and often is at odds with Sword Man. Her most virtuous quality is her firm belief in authenticity and self-love as well taking a stand against social norms and laws that don't make any sense. The problem is that her acts of rebellion aren't always legal and she is a teenager. Despite her prickly demeanor, she's not a bad girl.

Now, I know what you're thinking. Where am I going with this and what does it matter?

First off, I would love to do a reimagining of Mega Man. Second off, this is possibly the best example or reimagining in general in a way that doesn't feel forced, gaslighted or just done to please crowds.

In this case, it is natural and fine because like I said before, Mega Man takes place in a diverse setting that mirrors the North American. I mean, his own creator's name is Edward Light which is NOT Japanese nor does he look it. Moreover, in the original games, most of the robot masters had no personality, backstories or anything to begin with. They weren't even really characters. More like props. So if you were to reimagine them, it's very normal, natural and kind of expected for them to be diverse both visually and in their personalities. So them not all being straight white men isn't a stand or anything like that. It's just something that is.

Like... I just reimagined Needle as a girl because my mind just went there and I found it fun. Plus, I can imagine she would look pretty cool in her battle gear with the goth punk style incorporated.

And I think exploring this form creative freedom by taking a blank slate character and reimagining them as something is a good thing. It's how you breathe new life into something good and make it better. It's not disrespectful. It's having fun while being an artist.
