Do you think that Erik only compared his son to his ex-wife after the divorce or before? (Based on my comment on the platonic and incestuous style for them) For the first time he really pays attention to his son, for the first time he sees that although he 'lost' his wife, he has got the best he could have.

I think it was after the divorce of Daniel's parents that when Eric came to realize he could only see his son in a different way than he'd ever done.
I know that while living with Daniel, Eric would notice how much his son took after his mom when he grew up. Not just the features he resembled her but his attitude also paid a lot to his development which all reminded Eric of his ex wife.
Even though, I'd like to think Eric loved Daniel for who he really was (his only son) and not just a resemblance of his mom. :)
Idk, they seemed like actual ex lovers to me. (daniel and eric). Like they were probably a couple long time ago, but then eric decided to stop it because he was thinking of his job and daniel was pissed over it that he started getting into trouble.

They were definitely having an affair before things all went down hill with their life going on. Maybe they thought it would be better if they did not dive into the thing between them anymore.
Maybe when they came back to being a "normal" family, thinking it'd help although it was contrary to their (either Eric's or Daniel's) expectations. Which was also the main reason causing them having too much trouble to deal with.
I love the flashbacks of them so much, it looks like they were really in good terms and not as harsh on each other as they were in Saw 2. Proving your point on this too! :)
