Robert Rental “Double Heart” / “On Location” (1979)
More Robert Rental. One of the first releases recorded for Daniel Miller / Mute label, and another exceptional one for the industrial / new wave pioneer. His friendship and collaboration with Thomas Leer was perhaps one remembered very fondly as either of them could do no wrong. The Bridge released on Genesis’ Industrial Records in the same year was the largest and best example of synthpop, post-punk, industrial, and new wave in its’ infancy. Both sides of Rental’s solo single didn’t make it to The Bridge, but does retain both their friendship and slightly misanthropic and dark dystopian mood of their music. Though Rental does bass, synthesizers, and vocals, Leer visits with piano on the A-side “Double Heart”, a quiet, mid-beat number. “On Location” mixes late Seventies punk with industrial details, suddenly broken by Rental’s sharp echoic screams. This single might not be as abrasive as The Bridge but you can never go wrong with anything Rental and Leer. Add Miller with technician duties from Eric Radcliffe and John Fryer, plus everything having to do with Mute, and perhaps being wrong shouldn’t even be an issue.
