The Griffoni Polyptych at Palazzo Fava, Bologna.ββββββ ββββββ Here β’ Santa Lucia β’ by Francesco del Cossa from c. 1472-73. β β One of the most important masterpieces of the Renaissance! β β The Griffoni PolyptychΒ is a series of sixteen tempera paintings on poplar panels. β This extraordinary altarpiece, dedicated to San Vincenzo Ferrer, was commissioned around 1470-1472 by the Griffoni family to Francesco del Cossa from Ferrara β an artist already active in those years in Bologna β for his chapel in Bolognaβs Basilica di San Petronio. β β The Polyptych marked the beginning of Francesco del Cossaβs collaboration with the younger Ercole deβ Roberti, thus giving life to one of the most formidable artistic associations of the second half of the Italian fifteenth century. The woodcarver Agostino de Marchi da Crema worked together with the two artists, who created the frame, which has unfortunately been lost today. β β The altarpiece was removed and dismembered in 1725 by the will of the new owner of the chapel, the Aldrovandi family.
