Showdown in Space! (DC SuperHero Girls)
Written by Courtney Carbone and Illustrated by Pernille Ørum
Random House Children’s Books (2017)
32 pages
Ages 5-8
Anything geeky always has a special place in my heart, but when I was little you either like the often only female character or have no female role models. These days I am very pleased to see mainstream media increasingly willing to let their female geek flag fly. DC Superhero Girls has been coming out with fiction books for children of all ages for the past couple of years. This Step Into Reading Level 3 book is an example of what they offer for younger children.
The story is fairly straightforward, Wonder Woman, Supergirl, and Starfire leave Super Hero High take part in a Model United Planets when the meeting is suddenly under attack. They are able to thwart the attack and make some new friends along the way. There is a defined beginning, climax, and resolution with a fast moving pace and actions, but this is a book for younger readers who appreciate shorter stories.
A lot of the genre specific vocabulary such as asteroids, heat vision, and force field may be a bit difficult for some readers to understand, but the illustrator does a good job demonstrating the action. I only wish the cast was a bit more diverse, blue skinned people don’t count.
This is a fun story for any super hero lover of any gender, but a particular delight to female fans. However, the age range seems a little low to me. I would age the book from up to 6 - 8.

He watched as the blood surfaced from his right wrist and trickled over his hand. The mirror was in a thousand pieces from where he punched it. With the broken piece, Rhys cut down his other wrist and let it bleed. Both hands held over the tub to prevent having too big of a mess for the nurses.
His body became cold.
His toes went numb
Things went black.
Rhys fell to the floor continued bleeding out until a nurse came in and alerted the doctors and staff.
He was transported to the ICU and put under surveillance.
Dr. Grayson changed out prescriptions and left instructions for whoever would be taking care of him.
His things collected from his previous room, among his clothes was his wedding band that he removed.
When he woke, he was alone. The room was more blue than yellow. He was hooked up to even more machines and decided this was how his life would go. Lonely.
Because when you're two halves of a whole, you become a whole yourself.
And sometimes giving up means gaining independence.
And an independent whole must be a hell of a lot better than being a needy, broken half.
Rhys didn't call Joe. He sucked it up and went back to sleep.
