Bhutan is one of the few sovereign states in the world which still carries out a full coronation. The current King had his coronation in 2008 after his father’s abdication, on a date chosen by royal astrologers. The event involved the completion of sacred Buddhist rites before the former King placed the crown on his son’s head. Following the traditional ceremony the popular young King spent days greeting his people and participating in grand festivities with traditional food and performances.
