After not expecting to be king, George had an interesting relationship with his two major Prime Ministers. He had a similar personality to Neville Chamberlain and publicly praised him. Whilst he was quieter than Churchill, he later developed a close relationship with the older politician, who respected the king in turn.

Edward VIII only had one prime minister - Stanley Baldwin - and safe to say they did NOT get on. We’ll cover this relationship in more detail later this year, during our episode on the 90th anniversary of the abdication.

Two of George’s Prime Ministers - Asquith and Lloyd George - caused significant issues for the King. Both of them pushed the boundaries of what is acceptable constitutionally for the monarch to do. While we don’t know his exact feelings on either PM, we have written records that he did get on with his final Prime Minister, Ramsay MacDonald.

Edward had a contradictory relationship with his two later prime ministers. While he was a similar character to Arthur Balfour, the two men didn’t get along and the King felt undermined by the politician. On the other hand, the King got on well with the more working class Campbell-Bannerman, with the two men holidaying together!

From her will-they-won’t-they relationship with Lord Melbourne to her hatred of William Gladstone, Victoria had strong opinions on her Prime Ministers. Thanks to her letters and diaries, we have an insight into her preferences and it’s clear she let her heart rule her head.

Hello :) Firstly, thank you for your lovely words. Always nice to know we’re not speaking into the void haha. In terms of tiaras, they’re absolutely not just an aristocratic thing here. The main difference is aristocrats will tend to wear family heirlooms which are very expensive, whereas a normal bride would usually just pick something up in a bridal shop and it might not have real jewels. It also may be a trend thing. I see fewer tiaras on brides now than when my parents married in the 90s, but it still wouldn't be looked at as an odd thing today.
