Hi! In yesterday's (June 11) episode about royal weddings, Jessica mentioned that her mum had a tiara at her wedding, which made me wonder – are tiaras super common at British weddings? In the US, a bride who wore a tiara would be seen as incredibly extra/borderline bridezilla, so I assumed it was only an aristocratic thing in the UK, but it sounds like I might be wrong? Thanks in advance for answering – I love the podcast and look forward to listening to you each week! :)
Hello :) Firstly, thank you for your lovely words. Always nice to know we’re not speaking into the void haha. In terms of tiaras, they’re absolutely not just an aristocratic thing here. The main difference is aristocrats will tend to wear family heirlooms which are very expensive, whereas a normal bride would usually just pick something up in a bridal shop and it might not have real jewels. It also may be a trend thing. I see fewer tiaras on brides now than when my parents married in the 90s, but it still wouldn't be looked at as an odd thing today.

Just a thought: your discussion of the reforms to the Japanese line of succession was very focused on their lack of clarity. As someone who has drafted many policies in my professional life, it seems to me that the lack of clarity is perfectly in line with the long-term aims of the Imperial Household Agency, because it gives them the ability to handpick one or more adoptees.

Category 3 - other
In this category are the partners who entangled their lives with the royals before marriage. This group includes royals such as the now Princess Carina, who became godmother to Countess Athena of Denmark when she was still Carina Axelsson, and Prince Daniel, who moved into an apartment in Drottingholm before he was even engaged!
Category 2 (aka the British Royal Family)
Most royals - particularly almost all the royals in the British Royal Family - fall into our second category. This is when the public are aware of the partners, and they attend certain private events or events only linked to their partner. This can happen on a scale from only being seen once or twice, to be a known public figure in their own right.
Some royal families don’t introduce their partners until an engagement has begun.
For some royal families, this appears to be a family-wide rule while for others they are more anomalies.

Ooh, what a great idea! It’s on the list but in the meantime, here’s a few key facts:
It's an elective monarchy, where the monarch is chosen by a Royal Council of the Throne from a pool of candidates with royal blood
They have a lese majeste law - the last time I think it was used was in 2010
The monarch is similar in power to the UK - they are the Head of State, don't do day to day governing, but do sign laws etc
It was abolished for a period in the 20th century but has been back in power since 1993
We have also spoken about them before (a little bit!) - in episode 125 - if you want to listen to that too.
Princess Margaret's grandson Samuel Chatto is engaged, but it's his fiancee Eleanor who is our episode inspiration this week. She made history when she was invited to join the royal family's Christmas walk, breaking the previous tradition that only fiancees and spouses could join.
