The Indian / Tamil media and the society had already created a rule that dark skinned humans are secondary to fair skinned humans and the corporate companies from the west used this opportunity, created fair & lovely cream and advertised as Get fair in seven days which indirectly said that dark skin is wrong, you should be ashamed for being dark. The rise of cosmetic products came to India at early 90s this is when Aishwariya Rai Bachan, priyanka chopra became as world beauty queen. They used these women's as their brand ambassadors to advertise their cosmetic brands. If you come across any Indian or Tamil family, most of the cases the husbands are dark and the wife is fair. There is a unwritten rule that a man will or should marry a fair skinned girl. Even most of the males prefer fair skinned females, that's what the media had done to the human minds. The worst part is they have created a similar cream for men as well. We can see influential people like Sha Rukh Khan appearing in the advertisement and saying to use this cream to become fair and gain confident.
