The Last Snowman Knows
A child knows it first. Children always do.They sense when something is listening. The snowman stands at the edge of the yard, imperfect and leaning, his coal eyes slightly misaligned, his smile uncertain. He does not see the child watching him, but something in the cold tightens, aligns, and recognizes the attention. The snowman does not remember events the way people do. He does not recall…
I am a doormat, discarded on a muddy path in the rainy season. To question my utility is foolishness. I am the fool. I am!? The awareness of my existence belongs solely to me, but why, I do not know. It feels as if I once belonged to a grand mansion, a doormat tread upon by a select few, who never acknowledged my presence then or now. I await the winter, when a homeless person might use me as a cover. I will sleep, too, and then one day, when he finds another doormat, I will burn in the evening fire.
Thank you, homeless man, for that second you picked me up. Thank you for being aware or you were not, even for a moment, that I exist. It is excruciating not knowing the self, if I could know who the self is—you or me.
