That's why I absolutely adore those rare moments when Laura allows Kerry to show her vulnerability for a split second. It's like a sudden flash of lightning on a moonless night. You're almost home, and your eyes have become so accustomed to the darkness that you can easily discern the outline of your neighbors' fence. But then… Then the sky turns from black and blue to an unimaginable white. A brief flash and a bright, clear streak directly above you. You're startled by this sudden change, and your eyes fail you, turning the millions of colors and shades around you into a veil of white. But there's no thunder. The vision vanishes as quickly as it appeared. And you ask yourself, "Did that really happen?" And, of course, you'll tell your friend about it, who will ask incredulously, suspecting you of deception: "Did you really see that?" Yes. I saw Kerry's voice suddenly break into a whisper when she tells Carol about her (what she thinks is) real mother. I saw Kerry's chin begin to tremble when she realizes that, amid the indifferent chaos of the vast Lopez family, she does have one ally after all. I know you saw it too, but look again…
