so the easiest thing to do for usopp's story is to let the lesson of the boy who cried wolf take over and blame his lying nature for nobody believing him, but he pretty clearly always made it known when the lie was over in the past.
His line that he'd make sure he was lying by taking care of the pirates before they threatened the village is what's really indicative of his character, and it reminds me of why i like him.

āI am badā vs. āsomething bad happened to meā - Vegas and Pete (tw for child abuse & talking about trauma)
In a trauma informed approach to mental health people often talk about the difference between āI am badā and āsomething bad happened to meā. When we experience trauma or Trauma, we often internalize the message āI am badā. I think the easiest to understand example of this is with child abuse. Children who are abused often believe that their parents are hurting them because they are ābadā in some way. Thatās the only way a child can understand being hurt by someone they (naturally and correctly) look to for care, protection and love. And children can carry that message with them into adulthood.
Thatās whatās happening with Vegas. He literally says it to Pete. Vegas has no external framework for understanding his abuse. He believes he is bad because thatās what his father has told him. Obedience to his father ā seeking his fathers approval ā becomes rational if he, Vegas, is the source of the āproblemā. Thatās the trap Vegas is in and itās an unsolvable catch-22 because he will never be able to āfixā himself and live up to his fathers expectations (as Pete points out, those expectations are a moving target and have nothing to do with Vegas himself). This also explains how blithe Vegas was about Porsche telling him he sucked. Vegas was like, āyeah, of course I suckā, because he literally believes it and not just in the context of his (very) bad behavior.
Pete has also experienced child abuse but he understands that he wasnāt ābadā or āwrongā as a child, instead āsomething bad happenedā to him (although he may not always believe it, because belief and understanding are two different things).
The difference is crucial and probably also related to the difference between āI am badā andĀ āI did a bad thingā - for which Vegas clearly also has no real distinction. Ā
