On the 14th of March, twenty four years ago, The King of Fighters 2001 was released for the NEO GEO.
The King of Fighters 2001 concludes the NESTS saga storyline and introduces a revised “tactical order” team system where players can choose between three strikers and one main fighter or other variations, changing how assists are used during battles. Known for its fast gameplay, large roster of returning and new characters, and its darker story involving the secret NESTS organization, the game received mixed reception compared to earlier entries but remains notable for closing one of the series’ major narrative arcs.

The King of Fighters: NESTS Chronicles (3/3)
The King of Fighters series features a lot of clone characters. Kyo-1, Kyo-2 and KUSANAGI are palette swaps that use sprites from Kyo's appearances in the Orochi saga of games. Additionally, the NESTS games features two characters that go by the name Zero. The first Zero to appear is the final boss of KOF 2000, where its revealed during the ending that he's a clone. The actual Zero appears as the mid-boss of KOF '01, featuring a "head-swapped" set of sprites.
