W.I.P Toad Abode
This frog art is of the Houston Toad! It is endemic to central and east Texas. Unfortunately, due to urbanization the Houston Toad is now an endangered species.
The Houston Zoo is working on the species' conservation with captive breeding programs to release egg spawn into the wild. Houston Toads are habitat specialists that can only live in loblolly pine forests, so the reforestation efforts in these areas are critical to their survival.
This toad's extinction would be a devastating loss of amazing wildlife endemic to Texas. Not only are they lovely toads, but they also provide valuable ecosystem services such as eating pests like mosquitoes.
To support their conservation you can visit the Bastrop State Park where Houston Toads are protected. Part of your entry fees will go towards their conservation. You can also donate to the Houston Zoo's conservation efforts.
Do not fret if you are not able to see these endemic Texas toads! Regardless of where you are in the world you can protect your local amphibian species by supporting local conservation efforts.
As a wildlife artist and nature artist I aim to create scientific illustrations to educate people about wildlife conservation! Feel free to share this with others and continue educating about enviromental science 💚🍃
