At least she hadn’t really seen what had happened. She glanced down at her phone, on the table. Poor Jubilee. Isabella couldn’t even imagine what she’d witnessed. Even from the crowd, seeing the mayor getting shot in the head had been horrific. Her stomach turned, just thinking of it. Since arriving at the mansion, no one had turned on the TV, or the radio. Isabella wondered how many people had been killed.

She heard someone sit down, and looked up in surprise. Sabrina was sitting at the other end of the couch. All Isabella wanted to do was comfort her. When she’d first met the girl, Sabrina had seemed much older than she must have been. But now, she looked so young.

“How are you doing?” Isabella asked in a gentle, quiet voice. “I’m sorry. That’s probably a silly question.” She laughed a little, though it wasn’t exactly funny.

“Ah, daughter mine. I was wondering when you would ask for compliments. I know I don’t give them very often, but I do that so that you may improve. That being said, here are a few things I like about you.

1. As your father and teacher, I do have to mention something I found very likable about you, Enigma, when we first met. You were only 8 years old, I believe, when I took you in and under my wing. Immediately I was reminded of myself at your age because my dear, you were and still are a quick learner. Clever, you seemed to pick up whatever I was throwing down at you. Learning from everything I did. Obviously, I enjoyed that. It would have been frustrating to raise you if you weren’t so smart.

2. I act sometimes as though I don’t appreciate your attitude. The fact of the matter is, I do. I just don’t like it when it’s directed at me. I like that you aren’t so quick to accept everything that’s handed to you. You’re sceptical, and sometimes you can be sassy. That is fine, in fact your quick remarks are very enjoyable. I find you and your rude remarks to be almost endearing. Of course, you were raised by me. So it’s normal that I enjoy you for the quick-tongued woman that you have become.

“Did Jubilee send you?” Harry frowns as he sits down at one of the benches in the lab. He knows it’s late, but he can’t just sit around at the apartment and wait for Jubilee to come home, and now that she’s working stranger hours he has a reason to be at the office more. “I’m fine, seriously. Just because I dropped one beaker doesn’t mean I’m losing it.”
