John hadnât taken his boots off. He sat on the edge of his bed, elbows resting on his thighs, fingers locked so tight his knuckles had turned white. His skin still tingled, like his veins were wired wrong. Like the echo of that moment was still reverberating inside him, trying to replay itself in every heartbeat.
He hadnât told anyone. Couldnât. What would he even say?
Yeah, I found her hiding in the dark, terrified, lit up like a live fuse. She looked at me, and suddenly my whole damn body forgot how to think. I just⌠touched her. And then I couldnât stop.
John clenched his jaw. Hard. The memory bit down on him.
He wasnât that guy. Heâd spent a lot of time proving he wasnât., Even when things got violent, it had always been about control, his control. Discipline. Strength. But whatever the hell had happened down there, it hadnât been strength. It had been⌠something else. Primal. Instinctual. Out of his hands from the second it started.
And God help him, he couldnât stop thinking about it.
The way sheâd looked at him. Like sheâd seen something in him. Like sheâd known exactly what he needed.
That soft, dazed touch to his face. Her breath hitched. The way her whole body arched toward him like it was meant to fit there. She was drugged. Wired. Still amped from whatever the hell they did to her.
And you touched her like she was yours to take.
His hands curled tighter.
You didnât take anything, he told himself. You stopped. She passed out. You pulled away.
The energy, whatever it was, had exploded out of her, tossed him like a ragdoll, and burned the breath from his lungs. Heâd come to on the concrete, coughing blood, heart pounding like heâd run five miles. And there was only one thing he could think of.
Where is she? Is she breathing? Did I hurt her?
That was the worst part. Not the energy. Not the burn. The fear that whatever he was, whatever part of him that lit up when she touched him, mightâve broken her.
He hadnât even asked her name. Now she was up in medbay. And he was sitting down here, heart still hammering, wondering what it meant that he wanted to go see her. That he wanted to feel it again. The weight. The pull. The way sheâd made him forget all the noise.
Youâre not that guy, he reminded himself again.
But when he finally lay down, boots still on, fists clenched tight⌠he dreamed of her fingers again. Reaching for him like he was the only thing that could steady the storm.
âSo⌠nobody saw the EMP coming?â Bucky askedÂ
âThe blast destroyed every bit of electronics within two miles,â Ava said.
âThatâs not the kind of failure you get from a generator hiccup. Something killed the lights and everyone inside, but left one girl breathing.â Yelena huffed.
âYeah. Her,â John said tightly. He didnât meet anyoneâs eyes. He hadnât since they got back. His jaw kept clenching as he tried to avoid the things he was feeling.
âAnd you found her alone?â Ava asked.
âYeah. Hiding in the sublevel supply crawl space. She⌠passed out when I tried to get her out.,â he said carefully.
âPassed out. Just like that?â Yelenaâs brow pinched in obvious skepticism. John shrugged with too much force.
âYou werenât there. She was crashing hard from something. Sedatives, maybe. She was barely conscious.â
âAny idea why she was there?â
âHer energy signature was off the charts. I couldnât get near her without feeling like I was going to phase out. Whatever she was doing there⌠someone was trying to build something. Or contain it.â Ava said quietly.
Yelena flipped through the thin paper file in front of her.
âThose scientists didnât just stumble into this. Somebody paid for it,â Bucky said certainly.
âSomeone high up,â Yelena said quietly. They all knew who she meant. Valentina.
âAlright, until we know more, she stays locked down. No interviews. No transfers. No exposure. Sheâs not a prisoner, but sheâs not clear to leave either,â Bucky said rubbing his hand down his face.
âWhat if she wakes up and is hostile?â Ava asked seriously.
âWeâll deal with that then. The guard rotates every six hours. Sheâs never alone. Not even for five minutes.â Bucky said as he looked directly at John. âYouâre on first watch.â
John nodded stiffly as his eyes flickered toward the table edge. âYeah. Fine.â
âIf she wakes up and panics⌠we need someone soft, not just armed,â Yelena said as an afterthought.
âThatâs you?â Ava teased.
âIâve babysat bombs before.â Yelena tossed back at her. Bucky raised his hand to calm the group.
âYou three rotate. Eyes on her until we figure out what they did to her and what the hell she did to that building.â The room fell silent.
The room was dim but calm. Soft beeping from vitals. A cold fluorescent hum. The world felt paused. Ava wassitting in a rolling chair, boots propped up against the wall. She was chewing something, gum or maybe a toothpick, and scrolling through her phone.
âYou lost again, or just sleepwalking?â She asks without looking up at Bob. Bob doesn't look at her. His eyes stay on the girl, a young woman, still unconscious, hooked up to a monitor. Her wrists were free, but the cuffs lay on the counter like a quiet warning.
âI was gonna ask if you wanted a break.â He says nervously. Ava eyes him. Shrugs.
âFine. But just for fifteen. Youâre not babysitting, youâre just the warm body by the bed.â She said as she stood and slung her jacket back over her shoulders. âDonât talk to her. Donât touch anything. If she twitches, call it in.â
âRight.â
There is silence after Ava leaves. Bob stands still for a long minute, then sinks into the chair, arms crossed. He watched the steady rise and fall of her chest.
She jolts suddenly, gasping for air and coughing. Bobâs on his feet in a second, startled.
Her fingers curled against the sheets, and her eyes flew open, wild and unfocused. The monitor beeps from an unseen surge. She yanked herself upright so fast the IV line jerked, and Bob instinctively moved forward to soothe her.
âHey, hey! Itâs okay! You're safe, you're not in danger.â He said quickly holding his hands up.
âWhere am I? Where- who-?â Her panicked questions tumble from her lips faster than she can think.
âMy nameâs Bob. Youâre in a medical bay. With people who are trying to help you. You were unconscious. We took you out of the facility. Whatâs your name?â
âLily,â she says like she is uncertain. âWhat facility?â Sheâs breathing fast, looking around, defensive. Sheâs scared. Her hands are already pressing back against the mattress, ready to push off, ready to run.
âWe found you alone. Do you remember anything?â Heâs trying to keep calm for her, but a small panic is creeping up his back. Just a little warning telling him to run.
âNo. IâI wasâŚâ She touched her temple. Winced. âI donât know what happened. Where are the doctors?â
âThere were no survivors. You were the only one we found.â He explained before realizing he probably shouldnât have. It freezes her. Her eyes snap back up at him, wide with shock.
âYou're lying.â She denies it if it could change things.
âIâm not. Look, you donât have to believe me. But I need to call the others. Youâre not alone anymore, alright?â Bob steps back, slowly, and presses the intercom panel beside the bed. Lily doesn't answer. She doesn't move either.
âSheâs awake.â He said. âI need the team down here. Now.â There is a crackle of acknowledgment that comes through. Lilyâs eyes havenât left him.
âWho are you?â Her question isnât asking what his name is.
âJust someone who didnât want you waking up alone.â He said after a minute. She doesnât respond. Her hands fall back to her lap. Her body is stiff, defensive. Like sheâs waiting for the catch. Outside the medbay, footsteps are coming up fast.
Bucky enters first, sharp-eyed, scanning. His stance goes tight when he sees Lily sitting upright, wide awake, and clearly alert. Behind him are Yelena, Ava, and Alexi. John follows behind the rest of them stepping in more slowly, expression unreadable.
âHow longâs she been up?â Bucky asked looking over at Bob.
âCouple minutes. Sheâs stable. Alert. Not aggressive.â He adds the last like it will defuse the tension in the room.
âThat can change real quick,â Ava said before taking a calming breath. Lily tenses at the new faces. Her back presses to the headboard. She doesnât speak.
âYouâre not a prisoner. Youâre under observation until we know what happened to youâand what happened back at the facility,â  Bucky explains clearly. He knows what itâs like to be confused and lost.Â
âThe facility⌠the power went out. I donât remember anything after that.â Her voice is flat, measured, but not cold. It sounds like someone trying to sound stronger than they feel and Bob feels that pain echo through him.
âWe didn't find anyone else. No survivors. The power grid was cooked like it had taken a direct hit. Like EMP-level.â Ava tried to explain. Lily looks down at her hands. Her knuckles are scraped. Like she fought her way out of something.
âYou remember your name?â Alexi asked trying to provide some level of comfort.
âLily Calder.â She hesitates. âI turned eighteen two weeks ago.â She adds quietly. That sits heavy for a beat. It reframes the room. Sheâs barely more than a girl.
âLily⌠you said the power just went out. Before the blackout, were you being held? Or were you there willingly?â Bucky asked
âI didnât ask to be there.â She shook her head quickly but she didnât elaborate. Her fingers pull at the edge of her shirt, twisting it. Everyone in the room registers that, Bob especially. His chest tightens.
âYou remember what they were doing to you?â Yelena asked gently.
âSome of it. Not all. They kept saying it wasnât ready. That I wasnât ready. They didnât let me leave.â She looks up suddenly emotion rolling off of her in waves. âDid I kill them?â
The team goes still.
âWe donât know. No bodies were found intact. The facility was destroyed from the inside out. It couldâve been an overload. Containment breach. Couldâve been someone else.â It's the truth and he knows she needed to hear that.
âWeâre not accusing you. But we do need to know what youâre capable of.â Ava responds firmly.Â
âI donât know what I am.â Lily blinks fast, trying to hold back tears.
âThen weâll figure it out. Together.â Bob says softly. Heâs not sure why he chose those words, but he feels better, calmer, after he says them and Lily looks more at ease. Bucky gives him a small glanceâcurious but not reprimanding.
âNo interrogations. No pressure.â He says that to her. âShe stays in med until weâre sure her vitals are stable and sheâs not a threat, to herself or anyone else. We keep the rotation. Someone with her at all times.â The rest is for the team.
âLike guarding a bomb we donât know how to disarm,â Alexi mutters as the team disperses from the room.
âExactly,â Yelena says over her shoulder.
âYou donât have to talk unless you want to. But youâre safe here. Thatâs a promise.â Bucky says after a moment. She nods slowly.
âCan I have water?â She asked quietly. Bob moved before anyone else. Reached the counter and passed her a paper cup without saying a word.
She looks at him like sheâs trying to figure something out. âThank you.â
âYou want to explain what the hell she was doing in that place?â He asked breaking the silence.
âWhat do you expect me to say?â She laughs.
âI want you to tell me why a kid was wired into an underground lab thatâs off the books and full of dead scientists.â His gaze is cold.
âThe site was flagged for illegal research months ago. We sent a team to assess, your team, Barnes. If youâd gotten there earlier, maybe weâd be having a different conversation.â The obvious deflection lands flatly with him.
âDonât play dumb with me. You funded that facility.â His hands move to rest on his hips.
âI oversee hundreds of budgets. That doesnât mean I sign off on what lunatics do behind closed doors.â She was getting defensive now.
âYou knew she was there.â
âNo. I didnât.â Her smile finally slips.
âThen why are you so interested?â he asks hoping to corner her.
âBecause we found a survivor. Because everyone else is dead. Because Bob Reynolds is pacing around the tower like his skinâs inside-out,â she motions to the monitor. Bob hasnât left the medlab since Lily woke up. âAnd now weâve got a girl in the medlab who set off an EMP large enough to knock out two miles of surveillance.â She stands, smoothing her jacket. âThatâs not something I can ignore.â
âSheâs not going back into a cage,â Bucky growled.
âNo one said she was,â Valentina said loosely.
âThen what are you saying?â He was surprised by how things were going. Valentina stops at the door. She turns her head just slightly, just enough to glance at him over her shoulder.
âKeep Bob away from her.â
âWhy?â Bucky asked, frowning.
Her expression doesnât change. âNo reason.â She shrugged before exiting the building without another word.
Bucky remains, jaw tight, staring at the closed door with the creeping feeling that something has just shifted beneath his feet.

Summary: When Bucky tries to get away from yet another moment of chaotic change heâs faced with a reminder that fate, sometimes, is kind to those that wait.Â
Warnings: Smut and a truckload of feels.Â
A/N: I donât know how @littledarlinhavefaithinme does it but for the second time one of her writing challenges has sent me on a journey I didnât expect but am so happy to have gone on. (Prompt in bold.)
I hope yâall can forgive the lack of series updates in lieu of this (lengthy) one-shot.
Oh and I finally said, âFuck it,â and made an OFC so feedback is very welcome. ALL the thanks to @wonderlandmind4 for being my beta to make sure I stayed on track with not slipping into my insert habits. She's a goddamn blessing yâall.Â
(If you should be in my perma-tags and youâre not here let me know so I can fix it!)
Bucky needed to get away.
It wasnât that he didnât appreciate the new friendships he was forming or the posh new digs heâd been granted courtesy of Pepper Pots and the Avengerâs Fund. He was deeply grateful. Even so, it was all so much so fast and he desperately needed to disappear to clear his head.
As he tears down highway mile after highway mile heading south, memories of another time when he needed the same freedom, fill his mind.
Unbeknownst to him, the summer of 1943 would change his life forever. In July they informed him that he was one of the best shots theyâd seen in a whileâheâd be an invaluable asset in the field. All Bucky heard was that they wanted him to be a killer. That knowledge sat like a brick in his gut for weeks.
When they gave him leave to return home for a stint in August he couldnât bring himself to head straight back to Brooklyn. After all, how could he look his Ma in the eyes and tell her what they wanted him to doâŚ
Instead, heâd done the same thing he was doing now. He ran south.
The New Orleans he pulled into would be different than the one he encountered all those decades ago. He knew time and the brutality of nature would have changed the city forever, but as he rode into the French Quarter he was pleasantly surprised to see so many things had remained the sameâon the outside at least.
The last time he was in this city he had stayed in the cheapest hotel he could find. To say it was questionable would be giving it too much credit. This time, he decided heâd give himself the benefit of a decent stay. The Soniat House was central and nice, but it still had an older feel that soothed him. He liked knowing he wasnât the oldest thing around.
Itâs too early to check-in when his bike pulls up, Sunday morning. He didnât have a plan, no sites he necessarily wanted to see and no memories heâd allow himself to seek out. All he wanted was peace. The easiest way for him to find that was to move, sitting still too muchâespecially aloneâlet his mind wander to things heâd prefer to forget for now. So, rather than linger in the lobby, he leaves his bike and heads into the Quarter on foot.
Despite it being fall the warmth and humidity are still heavyâhe loves it, if he never had to be cold again in his life heâd be happy.
After a few blocks, he finds himself in Jackson Square, staring up at the beautiful facade of the St. Louis Cathedral. A steady stream of locals and tourists head into the sanctuary for Sunday morning mass. He canât help but laugh at himselfâonce an altar boy.
He hadnât stepped foot in a church since heâd been free. Some part of him felt unworthy, maybe even a little afraid. After everything recently he longed for something familiar though. With slight hesitation he joins the flow of people, taking a seat as far back as possible.
A few things were different in the ceremony but for the most part, the cadence was as he remembered. He ignored the automatic urge to take communion, watching others with just a touch of envy. Would he ever feel like he deserved to do such a thing again?
The homily was oddly fitting. The priest spoke on forgivenessânot the kind that comes from some benevolent being but the kind from within.
âWe must all forgive ourselves, especially in the wake of The Blip, for the things we did to mourn, heal, and survive. After all, if our heavenly father can forgive us these things, who are we to stand in defiance of his wisdom?â
And who says God has forgiven any of us anything? Bucky thinks, bitterness filling his mouth.
When the service ends he tries to slip out without having to shake the Fatherâs hand. The size of the crowd prevented that though and he found himself face to face with the kindly man.
He grasps Buckyâs hand, a genuine smile on his face. âThank you for your service soldier.â
Buckyâs heart kicks up, âHow did you-â
The priest laughs a little, âYouâve got the look son. Have a blessed day.â
âThank you, Father.â He forces a weak smile and heads away from the crowd.
An all too familiar restlessness had settled over him since the priest had clocked him for a soldier. It was the feeling that came over him before a mission, similar to the feeling that hangs in the air before a thunderstorm, itchy and electric. He hates it. Â
Heading for the hotel once more he handles check-in. Since he rode his bike down heâd packed light but this also meant that settling in took not nearly long enough.
He showers, hoping the steaming hot water will wash away this feeling of anticipation but it does nothing. Staring at his reflection in the foggy mirror, tired eyes, grey dusted bread, long hair dripping with water, he comes to a decision.
With a plan in his mind, he changes quicklyâslipping into a pair of dark slim denim, a black v-neck tee, and his light bomber jacketâsure it was warm but heâd rather not deal with the stares. Â
It only takes him a few blocks to find an open barbershop. Swallowing his nerves he steps in.
In a little over an hour he stares, dumbfounded, at a reflection, he canât quite connect to. This is a different man, someone who died in 1945 and couldnât possibly be sitting here. This was the James Buchanan Barnes in the Smithsonian, the one in history books.
No, he says to himself, this is me. He still has his beard, albeit groomed, heâd never had a beard back then. The hair is similar, short on the sides and long on top.
This is me, he repeats. Like Sam said, heâs not either Sergeant Barnes or The Winter Soldierâheâs both, all the experiences, good and bad, coming together to make him who he is.
âYou clean up real nice son,â the man, who couldnât be more than 50 says with a smile.
He returns the smile, âThis is all you, sir.â All while thinking, Iâm likely old enough to be your grandfather.
Despite the manâs protest, he pays him three times the cost of the services plus a tip. What was the point of having money if you didnât use it like this?
Some of the anxiety lifts after he walks from the shop. He feels lighter like he left something behind there to be swept up and tossed. The rest of the afternoon is spent eating, poking his head into a few shops, enjoying not having anything he feels he has to do.
Evening begins to fall as he watches the Mississippi from a bench in Woldenberg Park. Thereâs a touch of pleasant coolness to the breeze now, lifting some of the dense humidity heâd grown used to throughout the day.
He breathes in the air, curling his fingers behind his head as he leans his face up to the sky, eyes sliding shut. Being by the water always brought him a sense of peace.
Itâs not that heâs tired but closing his eyes feels nice. Soon his muscles relax and he allows himself to doze just a bit. When he opens them once more the sun is just peeking above the horizon, a swatch of orange beneath a violet sky.
Instantly his mouth goes dry as a voice from the past whispers to him about another lifetime and a violet sky.
â
Sweat drips in rivulets down his back. The brass band chases away all other thoughts that could fill his mind. Cigarettes, whiskey, and the smell of the woman next to him fill every other sense.
Heâd lost track of time. Was it day two or three? Was this the fifth gal heâd take back to his squalid digs? When did he have to leave? He had to leave right?
His head began to spin.
âJames?â The woman next to him tugs on his sleeve. He doesnât respond, unused as he is to hearing that name. âHey, James?â
âHuh?â He looks down at her. âSorry.â
âI donât wanna bust your chops soldier but youâre lookinâ pretty sauced.â
âGuess I am,â he slams back the remains of the whiskey in his glass.
âWhy donât you take me back to your place then?â She coos the question against his ear. Her hands wander down his torso, grabbing his belt to tug him close.
This isnât what he wants. Sure, sheâs pretty enough but heâs too warm, too drunk, and too morose for this. He needs air.
âI hate to ditch a dame like you but,â he pushes her back, âIâm gonna have to call it a night.â
âWhat? Are you serious?â She looks so offended, he wished he cared.
âYeah. Have a good night, Carol.â
âItâs Mary!â She yells to his back. He doesnât acknowledge her as he makes his way through the crowd to the door.
Once outside heâd hoped for relief but in this southern climate, the sun being down didnât do much of anything for the heat in August. He barely makes his way down the street before stumbling into an alley to relieve his stomach of the whiskey sloshing around in it.
âFuck,â he groans pressing his forehead against the bricks. Theyâre barely cooler than his skin but it feels good none the less. He heaves once more before stumbling to the other side of the alley and collapsing.
A lump rises in his throat. He forces it down along with the nausea, cradling his face in his hands. Home. He needed to make his way home. But home meant facing the futureâŚ
âYou doinâ alright down there?â A velveteen voice croons from somewhere above him.
With effort Bucky forces his eyes open locating the source of that sweet voice. A woman leans over the edge of the second-floor iron balcony of the building he just wretched on.
âBeen better. Sorry.â
âStay there,â she calls down before disappearing.
He very much wished he had the gumption to run and hide. But his dignity was just going to have to withstand this particular embarrassment because there was no way he was going anywhere fast.
In a few minutes, a woman steps onto the sidewalk. Once he gets an eyeful he feels a little soberer and a whole lot lousier. This wasnât just some bland bird. The woman swaying toward him was, simply put, stunning. And she had undoubtedly just watched him hit bottom.
Excellent, he thinks.
âHere,â she kneels down holding out a glass that looks damp with condensation.
He does a double-take, unable for a moment to think about anything but caramel skin, freckles, full red lips, and the most fascinating eyes heâd ever seen. At a glance, they could be called grey but truly they were silver, rimmed with coal-black lashes and filled with tender concern. Â
âIâm so-sorry maâam,â he stutters trying to force himself up straighter. âI donât mean to be a nuisance.â Right now heâs happy he could blame the whiskey and heat for his burning ears.
âYouâre not a nuisance.â Her voice wasnât exactly the predominant southern drawl heâd been hearing in the city. There was something else to it, softer, foreign even. âDrink this, itâs just water.â
âThank you.â Gratefully he takes the glass, gulping down the contents with relief.
âBetter?â He nods. âGood. Now,â she pulls the stopper off an unmarked bottle and hands it to him, âdrink this. Itâll take the edge off.â
He eyes her suspiciously for a moment, searching for some kind of malice, as he takes the small bottle. Cautiously he sniffs it. The contents donât smell bad, a mix of mint and a smell that made him remember summer lightning. Strange, but honestly he didnât give a damn. Without any more hesitation he drinks it.
Thereâs a moment of zinging through his whole body and then⌠nothing. Not even the uncomfortable drunken haze remained. Yeah, he still felt a little intoxicated and his abdomen was a touch sore from vomiting but all in all his faculties seemed restored.
âWhat the hell is that?â He studies the bottle, looking for some kind of identifying mark. Thereâs only a little wax from where it had held the stopper and a slight greenish tint from the liquid that was once inside.
âMagic,â her voice sounds mischievous. He looks up at her and she winks.
Bucky laughs a little, âWell, whatever it was you could make a fortune selling it.â
âMaybe,â she stands, extending a hand to help him up. Once on his feet, he dusts his trousers off, more to buy time as he searches for something to say than thinking he could actually fix his rumpled appearance.
âApologies for chucking up on your place hereâŚâ Smooth, Barnes. Real smooth. He chides himself.
The woman only laughs, âOh this isnât mine. I was just at some awful party. Really, you did me a favor by picking this spot to lose it.â
He grins, âWell, in that case, I guess weâre almost even.â
âAlmost?â
âLet me buy you a drink and we can really be square.â
She raises an eyebrow, gesturing to the other side of the alley. âHavenât you had enough booze?â
He shrugs, âYou worked your magic. Iâm ready for another round.â
Those fascinating eyes narrow then soften. âAlright. But you only get one magic potion a night so if you end up in another alley youâre stuck there.â
âFair,â he flashes her a wide smile.
âLet me take this back inside,â she holds up the glass. âIâll be right back.â
Without a word, she hustles into the building. Honestly, a part of him doesnât expect that sheâll be back but in just a few minutes there she is, tucking one of her tight dark curls behind her ear as she heads out to meet him.
âGlad you came back,â he smiles at her as she approaches.
âWhat, think Iâd run off?â
âWasnât sure if a lamb like youâd really wanna go grab a drink with a drunk you met in an alley.â
âHow dâyou know Iâm such a lamb, huh?â Her eyes glint with the kind of moxie that really gets his temperature up.
âYou did just come to my rescue back there,â he thumbs back to where heâd been sitting.
âThat makes me a hero, not a lamb.â Multiple rings glint on her fingers as she sets her hands on her ample hips.
âTrue,â he concedes. âYa know, I didnât catch my savior's name.â
She smiles, âAntoinette.â She pronounces it in the French style, the first syllable making a soft sound as it crosses those lips. âBut you can call me Toni.â Itâs beautiful, perfect for her.
âPleasure to meet you, Toni,â he holds out his right hand. She takes it, soft skin sliding against his callouses, âIâm Bucky.â
âPleasure,â she nods. âCome on, letâs get that drink.â
She takes a few confident strides forward as Bucky stares at her retreating form for a moment. The open back of her halter dress is as tantalizing as the sway of her hips.
âDamn,â he whispers under his breath.
Pausing she swings her head back, a broad grin on her lips, âI know itâs a fine view but itâs rude to keep a lady waitinâ.â
Bucky laughs, âMustâve left my manners with my dignity in the alley.â He catches up, taking her proffered arm.
The joint she leads them to doesnât look like much of anything from the outside. Thereâs no street entrance, instead, they wind their way back through an overgrown courtyard and enter through a door thatâs seen better daysâin fact, Bucky was a little worried the thing was going to fall off the hinges when she swung it open.
As soon as theyâre in, he hears low notes of a sax playing a smooth song. Down the dim hall, they follow the music until reaching an intricate wooden door guarded by a doorman.
âWondered if weâd see you tonight Miss Toni,â the dark-skinned man flashes her a broad smile before giving Bucky the once over. âWe do have a dress code ya know,â his tone far harsher than when heâd spoken to her.
Buckyâs not sure what to say. He looks like heâd been rode hard and hung up wet and he knows it.
âOh come on, Cal. The Yanks havinâ a tough time is all. Make an exception for me?â She pats the man's lapel, batting her eyes up at him.
âFine, but only cuz that cure-all you gave my mama has her up anâ about again.â
âIâm glad to hear it.â Her tone is sincere.
âBut if the boss wants him out-â
âIâll handle it, Cal. Thanks!â She grabs Buckyâs hand and pulls him into the bar.
Violet shades cover all the lamps, paired with the haze from the cigarettes the room has an ethereal glow. People murmur quietly around small tables and in cozy booths, not a one speaking so loud as to interrupt the lone man on the stage playing that sweet melancholy sound.
Bucky doesnât even realize that she left his side, nor that heâs been watching the man play for so long until she taps his shoulder, two drinks in hand, and nods her head toward a back corner booth.
âThought I was the one gettinâ the drinks,â he says as soon as they slide into the booth next to one another.
âYou seemed to be enjoying the show, didnât seem right to interrupt.â Toni sips her martini, a satisfied look crossing her features before continuing. âBesides, not like I paid for it.â
âGot another beau up there,â Bucky tosses her a grin and takes a sip of the whiskey. It was fine stuff.
âHardly,â her eyes slide around the patrons, âbartender owes me several.â
âSeem to have a lot of people in your favor.â
Her shoulders lift in a shrug, eyes diverting to the olives in her glass.
Bucky decides itâs a sensitive topic and switches tracks. âWhatâs this about me beinâ a Yankee anyway?â
âYou are, arenât you?â Her gaze slides up to meet his, a little smile playing at the corners of her mouth.
âWhat gave me away?â
âOh come on,â her shoulder nudges his, âwith that accent? How could you be anything else?â
âI donât have an accent!â He plasters a look of mock offense on his face for emphasis.
âAnd neither do I,â she says with a snort.
âWhat is your accent anyway?â
âCreole. Donât hear too much of it in the city these days.â
âNot from the city?â
âNot exactly.â Those shadows again. âSmoke?â She reaches into her purse and pulls out a cigarette case.
âDonât mind if I do.â Bucky pulls his lighter out before she has a chance. âLet me,â he lifts the flame to her cigarette before his own.
She takes a drag. âThe boy does have manners,â tendrils of smoke accenting her words further.
âA few. Donât get your hopes up.â
On the stage, a small band has replaced the lone musician. Just a bass, drums, sax, and piano. More than enough though. They begin a slow but swinging tune that gets a few folks on their feet.
Bucky notices you watch them, a serene expression on her face.
âYou happy just watchinâ?â He asks as she finishes her drink.
Immediately she looks at him as though she forgot he was there for a moment. âI⌠yeah, usually. I⌠Well, I come here alone a lot.â
âThatâs hard to believe.â He touches her fingers gently with his own as they both stamp out the remains of their smokes.
âOn the house, Miss Toni,â the bartender says, depositing two identical drinks on the table.
âThanks,â she smiles at the man.
âAt this rate, Iâm not gonna get to repay my debt.â
âIâm sure you can think of some other way to repay me.â She leans a little closer, moving her hand to slide her fingers between his.
âHmm,â he hums, running his thumb across the surface of the rings on her fingers. Slowly, giving her time to pull away, he lifts her hand, placing a kiss on her knuckles. Beneath the table his free hand sliding just above her knee.
Eyes locked on hers, lips still hovering over her hand he says, âWhy donât we start with a dance?â
âSounds like a plan.â
As the two of them dance one, two, three dances the bar fills with patrons. Heâs not sad for it. The more people on the dance floor the closer he could hold her, the more excuses he had to breathe in her intoxicating scent of woodsmoke, roses, and a spice he canât name.
No oneâs doing the Lindy here. Everyone is dancing slowly, moving to the rhythm of the music and their partner.
Sometime in the middle of the fourth song the two of them stop moving, save for a slow sway. Those eyes of hers drawing him in. He lowers his lips, catching hers. To his relief, she returns his affection.
Eagerly she pulls him from the dance floor and back to their secluded booth. The larger crowd makes this space feel even more private, hidden. Heâs glad of it.
Bucky presses her back into the corner of the booth, kissing her hard. Those soft lips open to him and he tastes her, something sweet with a hint of gin and smoke.
With effort he pulls back, smirking at the little pout on her face. She wouldnât be pouting long.
He slides close, lifting one of her shapely legs over his. He curls an arm around her shoulders, drawing her into him. With her cheek on his shoulder, his body angled just so, and the privacy afforded by the booth he trails his other hand up her skirt, sliding his fingers around her underwear.
When his thumb slides across her bud he can just make out the little gasp she releases over the music and the crowd. Steadily he strokes, her body reacts, hips pressing up, demanding more.
Toni lifts her face up to his eyes glassy with desire, and kisses him until a small moan trips over her tongue.
âHush now doll,â he croons into her ear, âdonât want anyone to come ruin the fun.â
He can feel her breath quicken, feel her shudder a bit beneath him.
âYou like that,â he nips a little at her ear. A hand flies to her mouth to catch the sound. âThought so. Come on sweetheart.â
Just a little more and⌠She buries her face in his shoulder, hand gripping his shirt tight as she comes hard.
Bucky moves his hand, wrapping her trembling form in his arms. For some time he holds her like this, comfortable, and admittedly a little self-satisfied.
Suddenly he feels her hand grab him, fingers deftly caressing his cock through the fabric. His breath catches as he looks down at her smirking face.
She lifts her lips to his ear, applying just a touch of pressure, âYou think that makes us even?â Her teeth sink into his ear lobe causing his hips to thrust up, pressing into her grip. âNowhere close.â
In moments theyâre in the courtyard. Bucky presses Antoinette against the crumbling brick wall, pinning her arms to her sides as he trails kisses down her neck and collarbones.
âBucky,â she groans pulling at his restraint.
âCome to my place,â he says in a gravel tone after kissing his name from her lips.
âBet mineâs closer.â
âLead the way then,â he releases her.
The block to Toniâs digs takes several times longer than it should. Neither of them able to go more than a few feet without pausing to taste the other. Thereâs a moment when Bucky isnât sure theyâre going to make it to her place before having one another.
They do make it though.
Toni stops in front of a shop, the sign above the door reads: âMadame Antoinetteâs: Palmistry, Cards, Assistance.â
âYouâre a⌠fortune teller or somethinâ?â He asks as they walk through the suspiciously unlocked door.
âOr somethinâ.â She pulls him by the arm through the small waiting area lit by the street lights to a room filled with bottles, pouches, herbs, and other strange paraphernalia with one lamp glowing in the corner. The next room is clearly where she tells her fortunes, dark, save for one thick candle burning in a lantern.
Bucky freezes, an entirely new desire overtaking him.
When she takes a step to head out of the space all she manages is to stumble, anchored by his unmoving form. Confused she looks back to him.
âDid you wanna gawk at the decor or me?â
His gaze slides from the velvet covered road table to her face, trying his damnedest to keep his features and tone even. âRead my fortune.â
âNo.â Her tone is final. Once more she pulls at him but he doesnât budge.
His hand grips hers tighter before tugging her into his chest, âCome on.â He gives her what he hopes is a confident grin.
âI said no,â she pushes against his chest and takes a step back.
âWhy not?â His brows knit.
Toni looks at the floor, at the table, and finally back to him. âI donât tell soldierâs fortunes.â
âI didnât-â
âYou didnât have to. I knew.â
He doesnât want to know how. âSo youâll take a soldier to bed but not read his palm?â
âBecause I know my bed holds nothing but good things,â she spits. âThe fortune of a soldier is almost always bad news.â
Silence hangs, the air between them crackling. âBesides, if you need the cards to tell you what the product of war is maybe you should reconsider, soldier.â Itâs his turn to look away.
She strides to the doorway theyâd been heading for. âYou coming or not?â
âPlease,â his voice is thick with emotion. When heâs able to meet her gaze again he can feel the tears sting the backs of his eyes. Closing the distance between them he grabs her hands in his, immediately her expression softens. Â
âEven if itâs bad. Please, Toni. I just⌠I gotta know.â Heâs begging, likely losing any shot he has with her too, but it doesnât matter. âI donât even care if everything you tell me is bullshit. I just⌠I need somethinââŚâ
âIt wonât be,â he cocks his head in confusion as her eyes drift to the table. âFrom me it wonât be bullshit. It will just⌠be.â
âOk. I can take it. Better than not knowing.â
Subtly she shakes her head, pulling free from his grip and walking toward the candle. Bucky doesnât move as she lights a thin stick, using it to light another white candle on the round table.
âSit,â she commands. He does as heâs told.
Taking a deep breath Antoinette lays her hands on the table, palms up. âGive me your hands.â
He stares at her hands, suddenly nervous. âDonât you need cards or-â
âDo you want this or not?â He nods. âThen give me your hands and shut up.â
When her hands close around his her eyes slide shut. For a few seconds everything seems normal but then heâs overcome with the strangest sensation-itâs like heâs floating and yet weighted down all at the same time, his whole body feeling the way a limb does after youâve sat on it too long, numb yet tingling with sensation.
She releases his hands and he recoils instantly. When her eyes open he could swear that just for a second they were⌠glowing. It happened so fast he couldnât be sure. What he was sure of was the steady stream of tears flowing down her freckle dusted cheeks.
âTell meâŚâ
Her voice is low, resonant, âYou will become everything you fear. Ice will live in your veins. But only one hand will drip with blood, the other will remain snow white.â His breath leaves him. âBut they will never know these things.â
Somehow he knows who she meansâhis family.
He almost doesnât ask, almost doesnât want to know⌠âDo⌠do I die⌠there?â
âNo.â
âOh, well⌠I guess that something right?â He tries to force a half-smile, heâs pretty sure it just looks like a grimace.
True sorrow filler her eyes before she has to look away from him. âThere are far worse fates in this world than death, Sergeant Barnes.â
Bucky tries, he really does, to keep it together, to be a man. Heâs not strong enough though, not for this. The sob bursts from his lips before he can stop it. Desperately he covers his mouth as if he could put it back.
Before he can protest his face is enveloped in the soft black fabric of her skirt, one hand holding his face against her abdomen, the other wrapped around him. He doesnât resist, flinging his arms around her allowing the tears to take him.
Toniâs soft hands pull his face up to look at her once his sobs quiet a touch, âCome upstairs, Bucky.â
He shakes his head, âIâm sorry, Toni, but I donât think-â
âShh,â she slides a finger over his lips. âTrust me. Please.â
Stepping back she grips his shoulders, guiding him up from the chair. In a haze of emotion he follows her blindly out of the room and up a narrow staircase. It opens into a large open room with windows and balconies on both ends.
Past a screen toward the back balcony is a large, brass fourposter bed. Beside it she stops, fingers making quick work of his shirt buttons, sliding the garment off his shoulders and pulling his undershirt over his head. He doesnât stop her when they wander to his trousers. In moments heâs in nothing but his shorts.
Wordlessly she unties the neck of her dress, letting it fall to reveal her chest as she unzips her skirt. In another situation heâd never be able to resist those curves, but right now, how good heâd feel between her thighs is the furthest thing from his mind.
She removes her underwear and steps past him, climbing into the unmade bed. Turning he sees open arms beckoning him to join. Understanding dawns along with an immense wave of gratitude.
He makes his way into her bed, glad to press his back into her soft warmth, allowing her to hold him tight.
Toni presses gentle kisses against his left shoulder and begins to hum a pretty, soothing song. The melody accompanied by the soft whirr of an unseen fan and her reassuring presence soon rock Bucky into a deep, dreamless, sleep.
Soft morning light filters through the lace curtains casting intricate shadows on her sleeping form. One arm is curled tight against her chest while the other is tucked under her pillow. Through lids still heavy with sleep Bucky takes in the features of her serene face.
A mahogany curl lies over her closed eyes. Ever so carefully he tucks it back into the red-brown mass splayed across her pillow. Despite his best efforts, her brows knit for a split second before her lids slide open to reveal those silvery eyes. They remind him of full moons.
âDidnât mean to wake you,â he lets his finger trace the line of her high cheekbone. Her lips curl softly in response, reaching one and caressing his rough cheek in kind.
Closing the small space between them in one motion, Bucky kisses her tenderly. Turning her body to fully face him she returns his affection. He runs a hand down her side and around her back pulling her close against him, the warmth of her body making him ache.
She slides a hand between them, lightly scratching her nails down his chest and abdomen. When she reaches his hips she grips him, pushing him to his back as she rises to her knees.
He doesnât resist herâdeft fingers coaxing his shorts off before studying the planes of his abdomen, the curve of his hips, the tense muscles of his thighs. Not once though does she touch the one place on his body that is begging for it. Each touch elsewhere causes his cock to jerk painfully, desperate for contact.
Lips curled into a coy smile she leans over him, the tips of her breasts barely touching his chest. Lowering herself, she presses her body against him. He ruts against her, the soft flesh of her abdomen driving him wild.
She lets out a low purr, close to a laugh, âPatience.â
With her mouth teasing the tender flesh of his neck he lifts his hands to feel the curve of her spine down to her ass. Gripping the supple flesh there he tries to lift her, wanting to take her now. She reaches back, grabbing his wrists. Compliant, he allows her to pull them away, pinning them by his head.
Bucky had been with other women in the past. Never had he found himself in this positionâhe was utterly besotted.
When she covers his mouth with hers, he canât help but groan with desire. Her lower body shifts thighs lifting to flank his.
Rising onto her knees the light shines on a bit of moisture on her stomach. A tiny touch of embarrassment rises in him but is obliterated when she catches it with her middle and ring fingers, brings them to her lips, and slowly sucks them clean. He canât even breathe.
Those same fingers descend the length of her body and slide between her legs. Her lashes flutter, hips rising to her own touch. She removes them, glistening.
Before she can stop him he takes her wrist, drawing her hand to his mouth. Much as she had done, he tastes her, his tongue flicking the tips of her fingers. He holds her eyes with his, watching them widen as her breath hitches.
Toni leans down to him once more, shifting her hips forward. This kiss is unlike anything else heâs ever feltâhe buries his fingers in her hair, not wanting her to stop, not wanting the humming in his chest to stop.
He can feel the heat of her hovering just above him. His cock twitches up and just barely touches the soft hair.
Lips still locked together, she reaches back to guide him into her.
Bucky thrusts up, the warm tight feeling of her sending tremors through his body. Their eyes open when he does so both frozen mid-kiss, breathless from the feeling of being joined like this.
Neither move at first. The connection somehow enough to satisfy for a time.
Untangling his fingers from her curls he grips her thighs. With a fluid swoop she rises, holding her hair back with one hand. Never looking from him she begins a steady rolling motion with her hips. Heâs slack jawed with the feeling, unable to fathom anything better than this.
She runs her hands down to her breasts, taking her dark pink nipples between her fingers as he pushes himself deeper inside of her. He releases one of her thighs, wanting nothing more than to make her feel as good as he does.
As his thumb moves over her clit her head falls back, a dark moan filling the room. Her body arches, one arm braced behind her back the other holding onto his forearm, silently begging him not to stop.
âBucky,â she whispers, tongue thick. Her hips move into a faster pace.
When her orgasm crashes into her he sits up, twining his arms around her back to bring her shaking body closer to his. Toni lifts herself just enough to wrap her legs around him, allowing him to push deeper within her.
As he moves slowly, his fingertips trace goosebumps on her spine, the feeling that theyâre one being is otherworldly.
This is what it should feel like, he thinks, what it should always feel like, like magic.
âWhat are you?â He whispers, feeling her walls tighten around him.
âYours,â she responds.
Thatâs all it takes to tip him over the edge.
His fingers grip her ass, pushing their pace a bit faster. She braces herself against his shoulders.
âAntoinette,â he breathes, unable to make another word rise to his lips, unable to ask. Â
âYes,â she answers his unspoken question.
His whole body tenses, brows knit, a low groan rumbles from deep within him as his muscles release. With a need he canât quite name his mouth seeks hers again before they fallâpanting, sweat sparkling on their skinâback into the embrace of the bed.
âYou donât have to go, not yet,â she says as her fingers absently run through the hair on his chest. Rising on an elbow she turns those bewitching eyes on him, âJust stay until tomorrow at least.â
He tries not to dwell on how she knew where his thoughts were without him saying a damn thing. The truth was he didnât want to go.
âOk, tomorrow,â he agrees before catching her lips with his.
Tomorrow turned into another tomorrow and before he knew it heâd been falling asleep in Antoinetteâs bed for four nights.
In truth, it was all a sweet blur. Languid days spent exploring New Orleans by her side. Sheâd tell animated stories of the city as they walkedâpainting such a vivid portrait of events and people from decades prior that if he didnât know better heâd think she lived it.
Bucky couldnât help but smile as folks from all walks would stop them to thank her for some cure sheâd provided, some guidance sheâd offered. Without hesitation sheâd stop anything she was doing if someone made a request of her. More than once someone had whispered how lucky he was to be in her company as if he could somehow be unaware.
Heâd seen people in his life who wore their goodness like a badge of honor, something they hoped people would laud them for. Not her. It was just who she was. Each time he was reminded of this it also served to remind him that sheâd never be his, not really. He wasnât destined for such goodness.
When the sun lowered beneath the river they danced in clubs heâd never have found otherwise. Drank in music, and liquor, and each other like theyâd have all the time in the world to do so.
Now, he lays in her bed, studying the curves of her body through the open French doors, unable to fathom how heâd just had her and yet his body is already begging for more.
The new moon kept the sky dark and little light from the city touched the back balconyâeven so, her caramel skin seemed creamy, almost luminescent.
He rolls from the comfortable confines of her bed, padding out to join her. Without hesitation, she leans her body into his as he comes up behind her. Plucking the cigarette from her fingers, he takes a deep drag, his free hand caressing the soft skin of her abdomen.
âTomorrow,â she sighs, her head falling back onto his shoulder to be able to see his face. âYouâll leave tomorrow.â
He had decided to do so earlier that day, he just hadnât known how to tell her. âYeah.â She nods in acknowledgment, turning her gaze back to the summer night, twining her fingers tightly around his.
They make love slowly almost reverently the next morning. He doesnât want to forget a single thing about her.
As he sits on the edge of the bed his stomach flops over at the thought of getting on the train that evening. He rests an elbow on his thigh, leaning over to cradle his head in his hands.
âDonât go.â Her tone is suddenly frantic as she turns him back to face her, sitting on her knees in the middle of the mattress.
âI have to Toni,â he shifts his body to be more squarely on the bed. âI gotta see my family beforeâŚâ He canât manage to finish the statement.
âBut you donât have to go. Not to Europe.â She grabs his hands, gripping them with all her might. âWe could run. I have enough money tp go-â
âWhere would we run, Toni. The whole damn world is-â
âNot the whole world! We could go to Mexico City. Or maybe Saint Domingue, live on the beach, spend every day in the waterâŚâ Her fingers trace the outlines of his face, âPlease. Donât go. Donât⌠you donât have toâŚâ He knows what she canât bring herself to say.
âIâd be yours you know. Iâd say yes.â The twin moons of her eyes are huge, imploring, tempting. Tenderly he takes her hand, placing a kiss on her knuckles, shaking his head.
âYou deserve someone much better than me, Toni.â Someone better than what Iâll becomeâŚ
âDonât assume you know what I deserve,â shadows darken her expression. âYouâre a good man, Bucky, you deserve better than what you believe, better than what fate has given you.â Her hand covers his heart before her eyes squeeze closed as if in pain. He feels that same tingling as he had when sheâd told his fortune.
âToni?â His tone drips with concern.
When she looks back to him her eyes brim with tears. âPlease,â she says once more.
âI canât darlinâ. Iâd never be able to forgive myself if I went AWOL. I got a duty and Iâm gonna do it.â
âThen promise me something,â she takes his hands in hers.
âAnything, Antoinette, anything.â He means it.
âRemember, they canât take this from you,â her fingers poke above his heart. âNothing they do, nothing, will stop you from being James Barnes in here.â
âIâll rememberâŚâ He kisses her softly. âI promise.â Even if he doesnât believe her.
Even though he has to leave soon he canât resist pulling her to the bed again.
Just one more time, one more and leaving will be easier, he tells himself.
Heâs wrong.
Just before evening they stand outside the train station, holding on to one another so tight it almost hurts.
âItâs not too late,â she says against his lips after another hard kiss, âyou can change your mind.â
He just shakes his head, smiling sadly.
Under the light of sunset, sheâs radiant. The orangeâs picking up the red in her hair and the warmth of her skin. Heâd never meet someone like her again.
Thereâs something he needs to know, even if itâs not an answer he wants.
âWill I ever see you again?â Speaking the question aloud makes his heart constrict. Her gaze is distant, as she seems to look through him, the tingle beneath his skin there again.
Toni looks up and the sky, voice far away, âUnder another violet sky, in another lifetime, our paths will cross again.â
âIâll look forward to that lifetime then,â because clearly it would be better than this one. Her smile doesnât reach her eyes.
An announcement cuts him to the bone. Final boarding.
She grabs his face in her strong but delicate hands, the metal from her rings pressing to his skin. âI will never forget you, Bucky Barnes.â
âI wonât forget you either.â She looks away as if in doubt. He decides one final kiss will convince her. âI wonât.â He stares into her eyes, willing her to believe him.
âUntil the next time.â Heâs relieved she didnât say goodbye, there were too many goodbyes coming for him. She kisses him once more releasing him.
âNext time,â he nods and runs to catch the train.
Once in his seat he looks out the window seeing her. He slides the window open.
âDonât forget your promise!â She yells up.
âI wonât, Antoinette. I swear!â
He watches the tears slide down her face until sheâs out of sight⌠forever.
-
A tear slides out of the corner of his eye before he can catch it.
Heâd broken every promise he made to her. They took his heart, they took her. When heâd come down here, she wasnât even on his mind. Hell, had he even remembered those extraordinary five days with Antoinette until now?
He doubles over on the bench, arms wrapped around him.
Memories were a double-edged sword. They connected him to who he was, who heâd been before, but fuck they tore at his soul in a way that made him long for nothingness again.
Here was someone else to mourn, someone else to ache for. She was probably resting in one of New Orleansâ elaborate cemeteries now, next to whatever man got lucky enough to hear her say yes.
Maybe heâd find her. Bring flowers, say he was sorryâŚ
Her home had been in the Quarter, he could find that easier, faster, than a grave. It was as good a place to start as any.
Hands shoved in his jacket pockets he begins to walk in a direction that feels right, eyes glued to the sidewalk. Looking at the sky just made the ache worse, made her sweet voice ring in his ears again.
Turning a corner, not paying attention to anything but putting one foot in front of the other, he careens into someone.
âShit! Iâm so sorry!â He hustles to grab a can of coffee rolling toward the street.
âItâs ok,â a soft voice says. âMy mind was a world away.â
The coffee canâs metal body creaks a bit as his left hand closes a little too tightly around it. Slowly he turns to see a mass of mahogany curls and ring covered fingers gathering the other fallen groceries into a reusable bag.
Every bit of breath is sucked from his lungs when twin moons look up at him. He staggers back like heâs been struck.
âAn - Antoinette,â he stammers.
A massive smile lights her face, âI told you our paths would cross under a violet sky, didnât I?â His jaw hangs open, eyes blinking rapidly trying to clear her from his vision, as she steps toward him. She grabs the coffee can from his grip before he breaks it.
âTrying to catch flies, Bucky?â One bejeweled finger lifts his chin.
There are a million things running through his mind as he tries to make sense of thisâbut nothing will come out.
She turns, âCome on, my place isnât far.â Before she walks forward she throws a smile his way and gives him a wink.
Of their own volition his feet trudge after her.
Itâs the same building he remembers but the sign advertising fortunes is gone. Instead it seems the bottom shop is a specialty bookseller. Patronage by Appointment Only read the letters on the still unlocked door.
His head spins as he follows her through the strangely familiar yet different space and up the back stairs.
Her living space was still open and airy though it now sported a proper small kitchen close to the front. And when he looked toward the back he saw the light glint on a familiar brass bed frame.
âCoffee?â Toni asks, as though this is just a normal thing.
He stares at her for a minute, stuck at the top of the stairs, as she moves about the kitchen. She sets a brass kettle on the island burner and pulls a French press from the open shelves. After scooping coffee into the container she finally looks at him.
âDid you like chicory? I donât remember.â
âI,â his voice cracks. He clears his throat, âI donât remember either, honestly.â Trance like he makes his way to the small round table close to the front balcony, collapsing into the wooden chair.
âItâs good. I promise.â The kettle screeches. She pours water into the press.
When she sets it on the table she doesnât look at him. She turns back to the kitchen. He canât stand it. His left-hand shoots out, grabbing her wrist with cool metal fingers. Languidly she looks back at him, meeting his eyes full on.
âIs this real?â Bucky knew that dreams could feel as real as anything. The terror that this is a hallucination grips him. Toniâs expression is soft as silk as she gently touches the side of his face, he fights to keep his eyes from closing at how good it feels to be touched like this.
âI am very real, Bucky.â
Despite how insane this is he believes herâknows sheâs telling the truth, that heâs here, sheâs here, this is real. He releases her wrist and she unflinchingly takes his left hand for just a moment before heading into the kitchen for mugs and cream.
She sits across from him, sliding a mug over, âThat needs a few more minutes. Worth the wait though.â
Coffee is the furthest thing from his mind.
âHow⌠how are you still alive?â
A smirk makes her eyes sparkle a bit. âWell, technically the Antoinette Desmarais you knew is dead.â
âOh?â He laughs a little at the ridiculousness of this whole thing, âSo⌠How long have you been dead?â
Her smirk turns to a smile, âRoughly 70 years.â
âDamn,â he forks his fingers through his hair. âGuess I missed the funeral then. Wouldda sent flowers but, pretty sure I was technically dead then too.â
She shrugs, âIt was a small private affair. Most of my funerals are.â
âHad more than one?â
âA few,â she presses down the plunger on the French press before pouring the coffee. âThat was my second. Had my third in â96.â He watches her put a splash of cream in her coffee, normally he took it black but he follows her lead.
âThe government gets a little suspicious if you just keep goin'. But if you die and leave your estate to your namesake, well, thatâs fine.â She sips her coffee, âGuess you donât have to worry about that though.â
âNah,â he tastes his own cup, remembering that he did like this unique flavor back then. âFor better or worse theyâre pretty damn aware of me.â
Silence hangs for a few moments before he canât bear it any more. âYou didnât answer my question, Toni⌠How?â
âWould, âIâm a witch,â be sufficient enough?â She looks up at him through her thick dark lashes. He narrows his eyes, she sighs, âDidnât think so.â
âLong story short⌠I was young, stupid, had power, thought I could do anything I wantedâŚâ Her shoulders hunch forward, eyes on the coffee in her cup. âI⌠I went too far. Crossed a line. Someone came to stop me and I⌠I killed him.â
Bucky studies her, unable to imagine her doing harm to anyone.
âJust so happened he had a lover, someone far more powerful than me.â She shields her eyes a bit, cradling her forehead, âBit of life advice, donât piss off an ancient powerful sorceress, never ends well.â Leaning back, she tries to force something like a smile.
When he doesnât speak she continues, âShe punished me. In a way that, at the time seemed like a gift-â
âImmortality,â Bucky says in barely a whisper. He remembers the fortune she told, that there were worse fates than death. She would have known.
âNo,â she shakes her head, âimmortality isâwell that costs far more than I was worth to her, no she cursed me with life. A long, long life. I called her a fool, a bald hag--childish nonsense. But⌠well, I guess youâve discovered for yourself.â
Tears sparkle in her eyes when she looks back to him, âThere are few things more painful than to watch everything and everyone youâve known and loved die.â
âI didnât watch,â he slides his right hand over hers, âbut I do understand.â Thatâs why heâd ran down here, the weight of loss was too much.
Her fingers slide through his and for a time they stay like that, linked across the table, across decades, sharing an experience few would understand. It would have been enough to sustain him through another lifetime he thought.
âYouâre taking this all rather well,â she lifts a perfectly shaped brow at him.
âA few months ago I woke up face down in the dirt to a wizard telling me that somehow five years had passed and that I needed to go through a glowing portal to help save the world againâŚâ He chugs the remains of his coffee. âI also met a talking raccoon and tree. So⌠yeah⌠Iâll roll with just about anything after that.â
She laughs, âWell, Iâm glad you had a primer on weird before we met again.â
He lets out a small laugh too, he left out meeting a god and the million other small things that still felt unreal to him in daily life.
âHow long?â He asks sliding his thumb over the rough surface of her rings.
âLose your manners again? Itâs rude to ask a lady her age.â She smiles at him before finishing her coffee. âI was born here in 1821, one month to the day after Napoleon died.â
âSo when we met you wereâŚâ
ââBout 120? Yeah.â She pours more coffee into her cup, releasing his hand, âClose enough to your age now I bet.â He nods.
âAnd youâre still hereâŚâ He motions around the space.
âWell, I wasnât born here-here. I was born in New Orleans though. And I didnât stay here the whole time, I just come back home when I need something-â
âFamiliar,â he finishes the thought, knowing the feeling far too well.
âYeah. The city changes but the Quarter, sheâs kinda like meâwe get older, get get a little rough around the edges, a little worn down, but weâre still standinâ.â Toniâs expression is almost wistful.
As her expression is focused out the French doors, Bucky argues with himself. Heâd gotten off that bench earlier with the intention to apologize to dust and bones because he thought he owed her that. Now here she was, as beautiful and alive as the day he met her, and the thought of admitting his failure seemed impossible.
âDonât,â she says in a voice like velvet. He stares into her knowing eyes. âYou donât owe me a goddamn thing Bucky Barnes.â
He shakes his head, âI do though. I broke my promise.â
âNo,â she sets her cup down, grabbing both his hands fiercely, âyou didnât.â
Weakly he tries to pull back but she wonât let him. âAntoinette⌠I⌠If you only knew what IâveâI forgot you, forgotâŚâ he pulls one hand free to point at his heart, âForgot this.â
âNo,â she says again, âyou didnât. If you did you wouldnât be here.â He looks away, unable to find the words to tell her just how wrong she is.
She sighs, âYou do know I have the internet, right? I may be over 200 but Iâm not dead.â He looks back, confused.
âJames Buchanan Barnes fell from a train in 1945, was presumed dead. After the events at the Triskellion, heâs now known as the longest-serving POW in history, forced to take the mantle of the Winter Soldier and commit heinous crimes in the name of his captors.â
His stomach drops. Faster than any normal man could manage he shoots from the chair, sending it screeching back. Unable to leave her yet though, he leans his head against the frame of the French door, attempting to breathe.
Almost soundlessly she comes up behind him, placing a soothing hand on his lower back. He flinches at the gesture.
âBut you fought back,â she takes a shaky breath. âIf they had taken your heart youâd still be The Winter Soldier, but no, Bucky Barnes is standing right here in my kitchen. Because you kept a promise you made all those years ago, to a woman you hardly knew.â
âYou donât know,â is all he can manage without breaking.
âI do.â She lifts a hand to cup his cheek, turning him to face her. âI didnât see exactly what would happen to you, prophecy is never that simple nor clear, but I felt the void, the despair, the cold. I felt it then and I can see the scars in your heart now.â
He covers her hand with his, eyes closing. âI shouldda gone with you. Should of listened.â
âYeah,â she huffs out a dry laugh, their clasped hands lowering, âlived out your days on a beach, peacefully. But fate will have what she wants, I knew it couldnât be.â
Something occurs to him, âYou said youâd say yes then. ButâŚâ She looks like sheâs hardly aged, âYou would have stayed the same and Iâd beâŚâ
âDead? Likely so.â Her smile is tender, âBut living one lifetime with you would have been worth the pain of lettinâ go I think.â He shakes his head, eyes sliding shut, unable to fully comprehend why heâd be worth that.
âAnd for what itâs worth. No one said that offer had an expiration date.â
âWhat?!â His eyes shoot open in disbelief.
Toniâs rich laugh fills the room, âMexico City is still there, thereâs plenty of beautiful beaches around the world to see too.â She presses close to him, âAnd, itâs a little old fashioned but⌠I believe I would still say yes to this,â she points at his heart just as sheâd done before.
Buckyâs chest constricts. Without thinking he cradles her face in his hands and kisses her. She tastes like coffee and memories, her scent of roses and wood smoke and spice filling his nostrils. Her body melts into his, wrapping her arms around his neck, kissing him back with just as much intensity.
He breaks the connection, pushing her back just enough to look into her face.
âAntoinette, there are thingsâŚâ how can he tell her all the reasons she should run, all the reasons she should take it all back.
âYou can tell me everything or nothing in time, Bucky,â she traces his lips with her fingers. âIt seems that, for once, time is on our side.â
As the violet sky above them faded to navy and a fall breeze filtered through open doorsâthe two of them relived the feeling of hot summer nights from years past and dreamed of a future together that, though far from perfect, would maybe be a little less lonely.
Summary: With all her luck, Jinx has to wonder if it's good or bad. When she meets Bob, she starts to get her hopes up..
Yelena and Bucky were standing at the kitchen table, while John Alexi and Ava sat. Alexi was eating a bowl of cereal seemingly oblivious to the tension in the room. Yelena and John shared mutual looks of concern. Looks that were not missed by Ava. She looked back and forth between them like she was watching a tennis match. Bucky looked pissed as his jaw clenched and he white-knuckled the back of a chair.
âHey guys,â Bob said as he came out into the dining room. You were just behind him trying to support him with a hand on his back. Bob picked up on the tension in the room instantly, and let a hand fall behind him it brushed against your belly before placing a guiding hand on your hip to keep you close.
âHey,â Yelena said with a smile. There was guilt there, keeping the smile from hitting her eyes.
âSpill it,â Ava said. She couldnât take Walker knowing what was going on. Bobâs mouth opened and closed a few times, but no sounds came out. You somehow got more behind Bob. It was like telling them was the thing that was going to make it real.
âJesus,â John sighed watching the two of you. âJinx is pregnant.â
âWhat?â Ava gasped. Buckyâs jaw ticked as he flinched. Alexi put his spoon down and stood up from the table slowly, and everyone looked at him. He walked up to Bob.
âCongratulations!!!!â Alexi shouted as he wrapped his arms around Bob lifted him and squeezed. âChildren are the greatest blessing!â You took a full step back, slightly concerned that he might squeeze you that way. Yelenaâs shoulders slumped as she covered her face with her hand, muttering under her breath.
âThis is seriously happening?â Ava asked as Alexi put Bob down. She looked past Bob to you, âIs this something you want?â
âI think so,â you said, a little waver in your voice. This entire situation scared the hell out of you, but you couldnât quiet the feelings you had for Bob.
âI have something to say,â Yelena said after she had recovered from her fatherâs outburst. âWhen we first tried to rescue you from Valentina, I saw your blood test results. I knew you were pregnant weeks ago.â She looked so ashamed as she spoke.
âIâm glad it was you,â Bob said quietly. Relief flooded Yelenaâs features at the unspoken absolution.
âYou should have said something,â Bucky spoke for the first time since the team had gathered that morning. Heads turned to look at him. His tone was dark and serious causing Bob to return to his earlier stance. Like his presence would absorb any negativity before it could get to you. âYou endangered her and the team by not telling us. And you,â He turned and pointed at you past Bob, âYou left the tower in the middle of the night alone, without telling anyone where you were going. People here care about you,â he looked to Bob, âyou canât disappear like that.â
âIâm sorry,â You whispered, tears pricking the corners of your eyes as your emotions betrayed you. Bucky seemed to relax a little.
âDo we think Val knows about the baby?â Ava said in an attempt to diffuse the conversation.
âIf she knew sheâd be here,â Bucky said shaking his head and pursing his lips. âIt wonât be long though before she is able to recover some of her test data. And when she does, weâll know about it.â
âSpeaking of Val, and her test data,â Bob said quietly. âShe was doing a blood transfusion. Weâre worried about the effect it might have on the baby.â
âJesus,â John groaned. âThere is always something.â
âThe serum is obviously blood-borne,â Ava said seriously. âIt affected you when you had his blood, making you stronger and enhancing your natural abilities.â She pointed at you as she spoke.
âThe reality of the situation is that there have never been tests or studies about how this works,â Bucky said. âWe will have to wait to see if anything happens. We should also be prepared for Val to be asking the same questions.â
âSheâs not doing any tests on me,â You said fiercely as your hand came up protectively to your stomach.
âNo oneâs gonna let her touch you again,â Bob said definitively.
âWelcome to the team, kid,â John said with a small chuckle. âWeâre gonna need all the luck we can get.â Alexi held out a bowl of cereal for you and Bob.
âWeâre still going to train so that we're ready for her, right?â You asked sitting down.
âYes, but I think you should use a gun, not hand-to-hand contact,â Bucky huffed.
âWith the damage caused by the explosion the other day, I would think we have a few weeks to get ready before she is able to recover the data,â Yelena said. âBreakfast and then we get to work.â

Valentina stood at the front of the room, black leather gloves folded in her hand. It was 4 am and she needed to get this makeshift team moving. She looked around the table, eyes moving from one of her operatives to the next.
âThree hours ago, an EMP pulse hit a deep-black assets site, codename Asterion. This was not an accident. And it wasnât a malfunction. It was a full-system wipeâcommunications, internal power, surveillance, bio-monitors, fail-safesâall dead in the water.â She clicked a remote, and a satellite image flickered onto the screen behind her: a blank, shadowed silhouette of the facility. âWeâve had no contact since the pulse. No distress calls. No heat signatures.â
She turned to face them directly now, eyes sharper. âYour orders are simple: infiltrate, assess, and contain. I want eyes on that site and a full inventory of any remaining research, tech, or bodies. Anything that breathes or bleedsâyou bring it back.âÂ
"What kind of tech are we expecting? Biochemical, mechanical, psionic?" Avaâs brow tightened.
"Classified. Thatâs why youâre bringing it back." Valentina sighed as she responded.
"So⌠ghosts or monsters. Great." Alexi shifted in his seat with a low grunt, unimpressed.
"Or worse. Donât be sentimental. If it moves and shouldnât, you put it down." Valentina instructed.
"No heat signatures could mean mass casualties. Or a containment failure." Yelena tilted her head slightly, voice dry.
âYouâre to proceed under blackout protocolâno broadcasts, no trackers, no questions. What happened inside G9 stays between us.â
She paused debating how to say what she wanted. âReynolds will remain at the Watchtower. Heâs not stable enough for field deployment. You donât need a bomb you canât control.â Valentina circled the room once, slowly.
"Heâll want to know why." John shifted, a flicker of frustration behind his steady expression.
"He doesnât need to." Her tone dipped a degree colder.  âThere is no confirmed threatâyet. But the last time this much tech went dark, it was because someone inside wanted it that way. Assume hostile conditions.â She stopped beside Bucky.
âBarnes, youâve got tactical lead. Belova, youâre interior advance. Ghost, perimeter defense. Walker, recon. Alexi⌠break things if they get in the way.â And then, with a tight smile that didnât reach her eyes. âYou lift off in twenty. Burn it down if you have to. But bring me answers.â
The air in the sub-basement is colder than the rest of the facility. Concrete walls drip with condensation, lit only by the erratic strobing of flickering overheads. John steps carefully, flashlight cutting through the thick dark like a blade. Heâs not afraid, but his instincts are screaming that something about this place is deeply, fundamentally wrong.
Not an ambush. Not an enemy. Just something watching.
The silence is unnatural. No hum of backup generators. No mechanical purr. Just the sound of his boots, his breath, and his pulse hammering in his ears. Then he sees it. Movement.
Just a flicker in the periphery. He lifts his pistol, aiming it with practiced calm.
âShow yourself,â he warned, voice low.
Another shuffle, softer this time.
He rounds the corner into what looks like a makeshift testing chamberâmetal furniture overturned, smashed monitors, streaks of dried fluids he doesnât want to identify. And thenâ
Sheâs there. Barefoot, crouched in the shadows. A young woman.
Her hair is tangled and hanging in her face. Her skin is streaked with grime and something that mightâve once been blood. Her gown is torn in several places, stained, and clinging to her frame like sheâs been soaked and dried a dozen times. Small nicks and bruises littered her skin. Her eyes meet his, wide and glassy, lit faintly with fear.
âJesusâŚâ John lowered his weapon slightly, taken off guard by how fragile she looked. âYou alright?â he asked, cautiously stepping forward. âIâm not gonna hurt you. Iâm with a team, weâre here to help.â
The room humsâso faintly at first he thinks itâs in his head. Then his boots scuff the floor and it responds. The concrete almost vibrates underfoot. Energy is building in the walls. He approaches her cautiously. Then, like a magnet snapping into placeâher body leans toward him. The hum deepens. He feels it in his bones now. His chest tightens. His cock twitches.
It hits him fast. Heat. Urgency. A pull just under the skin, like his bodyâs betraying him, responding to something he doesn't understand. Every inch of him drawn forward like heâs stepped too close to a current and can't pull back.
She reaches for himâand something inside him breaks.
Everything else, the mission, the team, the danger, the rules, vanish under the wave of need. His hand is on her before he realizes it. Her breath hitches, and the feeling redoubles.
Itâs not like before, not with anyone. Itâs euphoria on a cellular level, addictive in its simplicity: take, give, feel, repeat.
He loses himself. She wraps around him like instinct.
He doesnât even realize she is passing out until he feels the energy snap suddenly, violently, and he's thrown backward across the room, slamming against a steel support beam with bone-rattling force. His vision goes white.
Then black.
John comes to with a coppery taste in his mouth. His ears are ringing. The overhead light above him swings in a lazy arc, dropping glass fragments on the ground.
He sits up slowly. Everything aches, but itâs his neck that throbs the worst. He reaches up, hissing through clenched teeth when his fingers brush charred skin near his collarbone. Burned. His hands are still shaking.
Across the room, the woman lies unconscious. Breathing shallow, but steady. Her fingers twitch faintly, as if still trying to hold onto something just out of reach. He watches her, chest heaving, and something heavy twists in his gut.
He should report it. He should call it in right now.
âBarnes. Got a survivor. Sub-basement four. Sheâs stable-ish. Moving to extract on foot. Thereâs structural damage, and no clear path.â John said in a strained voice.
âCopy that. Weâre closing in from above. Sit tight, weâll meet halfway.â Bucky replied.
John doesnât wait. He approaches her slowly, checking her pulse again. Then, without a word, he scoops her into his arms. The hum is gone now, but the memory of it buzzes under his skin. By the time he reaches the upper levels, the others are just coming in.
Yelena spots the limp in his step. âWhat happened to you?â she asked frowning.
âThe ceiling collapsed. Caught the edge.â John replied, tight-lipped.
Back at the Watchtower, Valentina reviews his bodycam feed. Thereâs a clean gap in the footage. A four-minute window where nothing was recorded, only static. She says nothing. John doesnât volunteer details. Not to Valentina. Not to the team. He buries the memory somewhere deep. Tells himself it was just adrenaline. Just instinct.

âWhat the hell happened?â Â Dean asked as he walked into the motel and stepped on glass. Â âSam?! Â Are you okay?â Â Deanâs cool was lost quickly and he pulled his gun as he realized the whole room had been trashed in an electrical storm.
âDean?!â Â Sam called in surprise from the bathroom. Â âDude, weâre fine. Â Besides if it was Jenna you know that guns are useless against her anyway.â
âSo youâre okay?  Youâre not hurt?â  Dean flipped a flashlight on.  âWhat happened in here anyway?  I thought you said she was gettingâŚâ  Dean trailed off before he turned and looked at him.  âDid you fuck her?â  He asked staring at her Sam with his eyebrows cocked.
âDeanâŚâ  Sam tried to deny the question from his brother.
âSam, I think I got glass in my foot. Â Sam?â Â Jennaâs voice was muffled by the sound of the water. Â âWho are you talking to?â Â Sam turned and looked into the bathroom. Â âOh shit,â Â Jenna cursed.
âYou were gonna lie to me about it?â Â Dean asked rubbing his forehead and putting his gun away. Â âYou know what, Iâm gonna go. Â You guys figure this out,â Â He muttered as he walked back out of the room.
âSam where are you going?â Â Jenna asked as Sam grabbed a towel and dried himself off before pulling his pants on.
âIâve gotta go after him, and explain. Â Itâs not what he thinks,â Â Sam said grabbing a shirt and walking out of the motel.
Jenna stood there in the shower the water still pouring on her back. Â She pulled the glass out of her foot, as the power in the bathroom flickered. Â She took a deep breath steadying herself as she knew the bathroom was the only area left with lights on in the room. Â She got out and pulled clothes on.
âListen,â Â Deanâs voice surprised Jenna and the hair on his body stood up. Â âI know that Sam likes you. Â But in my opinion, youâll always be a monster, and nothing is gonna change that. Â And donât think that Iâm gonna be okay with you and Sam hooking up. Â I think you need to get the hell out of our lives. Â Youâve clung to us long enough.â
Dean walked out of the motel room again, as Jenna stood there stunned. Â It took several minutes for the emotions to catch up to Jenna, as the charge continued to build.
âGet in, Sam,â Â Dean said as he pulled the Impala up next to the tall man.
âWhat the hell, Dean?â Â Sam asked as he sat in the passenger seat. Â âWho I want to be with is not your business and you donât get a say in it.â
âActually I do, Sam. Â Iâm with you all the time, and she is dangerous. Â To herself and us,â Dean didnât even look at Sam.
âSheâs not dangerous. Â Sheâs just scared.â Â As if to contradict Samâs words, a bolt of energy like lightning crashed through the sky and struck near the motel the boys had just left. Â The power in the town flickered and surged before several explosions daisy-chained around the town.
