English Education Live.com Today's Grammar Mini Lesson 12 Tenses The idea of learning 12 tenses freaks out a lot of my beginner students. There's no need to freak out. Only one tense is difficult, and some of them aren't used that often. Examples with the verb TO EAT: Present Tense ==> I eat every day. Present Continuous Tense ==> I am eating lunch now. Present Perfect Tense ==> I have eaten lunch. Present Perfect Continuous ==> I have been eating lunch for ten minutes. Past Tense ==> I ate lunch. Past Continuous Tense ==> I was eating lunch. Past Perfect Tense ==> I had eaten lunch before you called. Past Perfect Continuous ==> I had been eating lunch when the phone rang. Future Tense ==> I will eat. I am going to eat. Future Continuous Tense ==> I will be eating at that restaurant tonight. I am going to be eating at that restaurant tonight. Future Perfect Tense ==> I will have eaten by the time you arrive. I am going to have eaten by the time you arrive. Future Perfect Continuous ==> I will have been eating for a long time without you if you arrive so late. I am going to have been eating for a long time without you if you arrive so late. Some notes on the PRESENT TENSE: Present tense does not always mean RIGHT NOW. Sometimes it does, as in this sentence ==> I am here. But it also means something that is always true, as in this sentence ==> Kittens are cute. All kittens are cute, all the time. It's always true! OH YES IT IS! Present tense can also be used for the future WITH A SCHEDULE, as in these sentences ==> The movie starts at 8:10. The train leaves in one hour. The plane takes off at 4:05. These events happen according to a schedule, or a plan, with a ticket, or a reservation. So, if you try to use the Present Tense to talk about the future for something WITHOUT A SCHEDULE, you'll be making a mistake. English Education Live.com Today's Grammar Mini Lesson: singular THEY When To Use: Use for a single person of an unknown gender Also: Them Their Theirs Examples: Someone in my office keeps eating my lunch. I wish they would stop. There will be only one student taking an exam this weekend. I'll ask them to turn off the computer when their exam is complete. She is such a friendly and fun person. Every time she meets someone new, they always like her. If a person hears good news, of course they'll be happy. The person that wins the contest will have their choice of prizes. Who left this money on my desk? The person that forgot it should come pick it up. It's theirs. If anyone is mountain climbing today, I'm sure they're cold. Please note: The use of SINGULAR THEY is controversial! Some people prefer to use HE OR SHE instead! Example: If a person wins tonight, I'm sure they will be happy. If a person wins tonight, I'm sure he or she will be happy. English Education Live.com Today's Grammar Mini Lesson: when double negatives are ok What's a double negative? Example: I didn't know nobody. Didn't = negative Nobody = negative Just like math, two negatives = a positive! Double negatives often state the opposite of what a speaker intends! I didn't know nobody = I didn't know zero people = I knew somebody Double Negatives are sometimes incorrect, as in the above example. However, sometimes they are correct! Let's look at some correct examples: Person A: I don't want to take that macroeconomics class. Person B: You can't not take it. You need that class to graduate. In this example, Person A doesn't have the option of not taking the class. Person A must take macroeconomics. Can't + not take = must take Person A: I saw the last tangelo of the season at the market! Lucky me! Person B: I thought you weren't going to buy any more food. Person A: I couldn't not buy it. It was the last available tangelo until next year. In this example, Person A felt they had to buy that last piece of delicious fruit. Couldn't + not buy = had to buy Person A: Our band is supposed to play the school song twice during the concert. We are all so tired of playing it. We don't want to perform it at all. What should we do? Person B: You shouldn't not play it at all. Can you perform it only once? The students will expect to hear their school song performed. In this example, Person B is advising that the song should be performed at least once.
