Rant on Bigotry and Homophobia
I really don't understand the big deal of homosexuality. I mean, I'm sure a lot of it is probably because a)I'm bi, and 2) because I live in a small town that doesn't see a lot of it. We recently had a kid come out- his parents(hard core Christian-type) disowned him, but everybody else I know is super supportive, and if this (with everyone supporting) was how it was everywhere we wouldn't have a problem. But we do, because of people like his parents. They're basing their beliefs off of a book which is thousands of years old, has been re-written in every single century, interpreted liberally and extensively for every point of view, but then completely disregarded when it comes to other factors. They think (correctly) that they have a right to speak their views. They also think (incorrectly) that this allows them to make unacceptable, homophobic, bigoted comments. I mean, people say "Ban Gay marriage, it goes against the bible." "But there's a separation of Church and State; you can't use the bible to illegalize something." "And the First Amendment guarantees the freedom of religion and speech, so obviously the Constitution supports me and what I say." "No, it guarantees your Freedom of Religion and Speech will not be impeded by laws- its why we can have PEACEFUL protests without getting arrested. It doesn't, however, guarantee you to say anything you want at any time, and use your religion as an excuse to say these things. The Constitution is there to protect EVERYONE. NOT JUST YOU. You can't use your rights to deny other's their rights. GET THIS THROUGH YOUR THICK SKULLS." I get that some people don't like gay marriage, that it goes against their religion, but if we accept them because they have different beliefs than us, then why can't they accept us for who we are? I mean, if you don't like homosexuals don't be one. I mean, I don't believe in Judaism- so I don't practice it. I don't like tacos, and the man in front of me is ordering a taco instead of a burger- doesn't mean I'm going to shame him from the store for his food choice, or put up a giant fuss that he's ordering something I don't like. Maybe I'm just feeling fired up a bit tonight, maybe its cuz I'm screwy in the head, maybe I'm just finally fed up with this kinda shit. But I felt the need to post this, it's been on my mind for a while, and I decided to do it.
