Isabela and Mirabel have a revealing conversation post-fall.
Snippet from my fic âTraditionâ that can stand on its own and I actually really like, so Iâm posting here.
Itâs been a few days since Casita fell.
Isabela hasnât been able to feel anything but a weight on her chest.
She almost lost her little sister.
Because she couldnât stand up for herself to Abuela.
Because she let Mirabel be blamed and screamed at, all because she was afraid.
Isabela was sorting through the clothing thatâd been loaned to them, putting them in piles according to size when the very sister sheâd been thinking of comes up next to her.
Isabela feels a hand on her shoulder.
She turns and sees a face filled with concern.
Isabela nods and puts down the shirt in her hands, letting herself be led to a chair.
I donât deserve your concern Mirabel. I was terrible to you for so long because I was jealous. Iâm so sorry. Youâre so brave and interesting and I wish I could be more like you.
Isabela doesnât say any of that out loud though.
Mirabel adjusts her glasses in a mimicry of their father and fixes her with a serious face.
âYou havenât broken it off with Mariano.â
Isabela feels her eyebrows turn in.
She hesitantly nods, unsure what Mirabel is getting at.
Itâs Mirabelâs turn to look confused, not understanding Isabelaâs own confusion.
âYouâ you donât love him. You told me yourself.â Mirabel gesticulates as she speaks, her hands flying wildly. âSo⌠why not?â
Old habits die hard and Isabelaâs walls are up.
âYou think I could do that now? Of all times? After everything fell apart?â Mirabel flinches back and Isabela feels guilt stab at her.
Isabela just sadly shakes her head and looks away. âThe family needs this now more than ever.â
âIsa, look at me.â She keeps her gaze locked on the ground.
Isabela tilts her head fractionally and looks at Mirabel out of the corner of her eyes.
Mirabel reaches out and grasps Isabelaâs hands.
âThe family doesnât need you to be anyone but yourself. No one would want you to marry a man you donât love. Especially not Abuela. Donât do this for her.â
Tears spring to Isabelaâs eyes.
Itâs not even just Mariano either, but men and how could I say that.
Without realizing, sheâd said those things out loud based on the sharp inhale Mirabel takes in response.
Isabela finds herself wrapped in a hug before she knows whatâs happening.
âOh Isa. Thank you for telling me.â
Isabela blinks and the tears start to go down her face.
She hadnât meant to tell her sister that, the same way sheâd never meant to tell her that she didnât want to marry Mariano in the first place.
But holy crap does she feel great now that she has.
Mirabel just seemed to drag the truth out of her these days.
âI love you. Iâm proud of you. And you donât have to tell anyone anything you donât want.â Mirabel draws back and cups Isabelaâs cheeks just like MamĂĄ does and wipes away the tears.
âBut you do owe Mariano the truth that you donât love him.â
Isabela closes her eyes at that, letting more tears out, even as she nods.
Sheâs known for years that she was being unfair to him.
Trapping him in a loveless marriage as much as she was being trapped herself.
âAlso⌠it might not be the best time to mention but I think Dolores might like him.â Mirabel letâs out the words in a rush and Isabelaâs eyes open in surprise.
Mirabel has a shocked look of her own as if she canât believe she said the words out loud.
âWhâwhat?â Isabela whispers.
Mirabel cringes but nods.
Isabela claps a hand over her mouth as she cries out, a lot of things being to make sense to her.
I was ruining her life too.
I was the girl in the vision.
Isabela cries out again, a mix between a sob and a manic laugh.
She has to go find Mariano.
She has to find her prima.
And she has to start being more honest.
