Make good assumptions and you'll never be an ass. Assuming the best of someone, even if you turn out to be wrong, reflects a generosity of spirit on your part, which is better than suspicion. But trusting blindly is not the same as giving the benefit of the doubt. The benefit of the doubt only applies when you have no reason to assume the worst except through suspicion. But once you know the true nature of someone's bad ways, denying that truth about them simply enables their bad behaviour.
