Okay, but Steve would become an EMT because everyone told him he wasn’t smart enough to go into nursing, couldn’t hack a four year degree. But he’s good with the practical stuff, and Dustin’s smart enough to help with the memorizing shit, so he can power through a year of training, right?
And look, it’s kind of weird for EMTs to get reputations, alright? Sure, people gossip about a hot doctor or the most helpful nurse at the ER, but he’s just a guy in an ambulance. But Steve has a reputation.
He’s young, he’s attractive, and he’s calm under pressure. And those things are all part of the package, obviously, but what really sets him apart is that Steve knows how to connect with people. How to keep them calm and sort through what’s pain and what’s fear and what needs fixing stat.
“Oh my gosh, Brenda, my little boy was full on heaving sobs, and this man, Steve was so patient with him. I’ve never seen him laugh like that when he’s hurting.”
“Steve the EMT? My grandma broke her ankle, and all she’d talk about for weeks how I should leave Davy for him. I’m starting to think she was right.”
And Eddie gets hurt, like, a lot, alright? He’s not the world’s most coordinated dude, and he’s got like negative two impulse control, and he fronts a metal band, so he’s had his fair share of gashes and broken toes and bad trips of every kind. But he’s also a trailer park guy, so like hell is he letting someone call an ambulance when he hasn’t been insured since ever.
But he considers it, once or twice, because Steve the Hot EMT is basically an urban legend at this point.
And one day he’s playing a gig with the biggest crowd he’s gotten yet, so he thinks, “why the fuck not?” and launches himself into the crowd, guitar and all. It’s metal as fuck for one glorious minute and then a chick shoves and a dude doesn’t catch and he’s falling between the bodies head first. The crowd is swimming, the sad screech of his sweetheart still ringing in his ears, and he hunches over his knees against the sudden queasiness that comes from sitting upright.
There’s a muffled shout to, “Give him space,” but Eddie can’t focus around the pain in his head.
But the warm hand on his back cuts through the noise. A firm, soothing voice penetrates the haze, and fuck, if he wasn’t probably concussed, that gentle authority would’ve gone straight to his fucking dick.
“Hey. Can you look up for me? I’m a medical professional.”
Eddie does--how could he fucking not--and meets the kind of soft hazel eyes he’d write ballads about.
And the universe must really have it out for him, because the first words out of his mouth, reverbing around the entire fucking venue from his lapel mike, are, “I can’t believe Steve 'The Hair' Harrington is 'Hot EMT Steve’.”
