My Sunshine

Rapunzel choked on a sob. Her eyes burst open and she bolted upright, drenched in sweat and her heart pounding a mile a minute. Darkness seeped around her. She kept crying, reliving the nightmares that had just plagued her.

“Eugene,” she cried out, suddenly flailing trying to seek out his sleeping form beside her. His eyebrows scrunched together and he moaned sleepily.

“Rapunzel? What’s wrong?” He rubbed his eyes and worked them open to look at her. He realized she was in tears and he immediately pushed himself upright and pulled her to him. “What was it this time?” He asked, knowing it was another nightmare.

“Zhan Tiri won, but she kept me alive and locked up. She cut off all my hair and she forced me to watch her murder you, and my parents, and everyone.” It still felt so real. So she turned into Eugene’s chest and focused on what was actually real. His arms tightened around her, his arms that were warm and strong. His arms that never failed to make her feel safe. His chest was soft and damp against her tear stained cheek. She pressed her ear against his chest and listened for the steady beating of his heart while she waited for hers to calm down and match pace with his.

Eugene gently rearranged them to lie down again. He held her so close they were sharing his pillow. She pulled her head back just enough to search for his eyes. He wiped away her tears with his thumb and kissed her forehead. She kept staring at his face, at the love and life she found in his tired eyes.

“How are you feeling now, Sunshine?”

“Better, but still too shaken up to go back to sleep.”

He nodded. He wasn’t going to allow himself to fall back to sleep before she did and abandon her. It didn’t matter how hard it was to keep his eyes open. Rapunzel needed him. So he looked around their room for a moment. The Corona sun emblem seemed to shine back at him. It gave him an idea.

He started humming a soft tune. Rapunzel felt it reverberate and echo deep in his chest. Pascal heard the commotion and leapt from his spot on the nightstand to Eugene’s shoulder and crawled up to his pillow before curling into a small ball above the princess’s head. She felt incredibly safe, secure, and alive with her two boys surrounding her.

Eugene began to sing a soft lullaby, “you are my sunshine, my only sunshine.”

Rapunzel grinned. She loved when he sang this sweet song to her.

“You make me happyyy when skies are grey.” It was working, she felt a calm wash over her and make her eyes begin to droop.

“You’ll never know, dear, how much I love you. Please don’t take my sunshine away.” He kissed her forehead and began to sing the lyrics again. He listened for her breathing to eventually turn slow and steady before he allowed himself to join her in sleep.
