EMPRSS : BLUE
EMPRSS - “Down”
SXSW 2015 - OEB Score: 7; Popularity Index: 2 Pairs Well With…Hundred Waters, James Blake, The xx
EMPRSS are purveyors of minimal pop music, a sound that goes from sultry R&B to anthemic melodies, downtempo dance beats to new wave rock. Their range is impressive given we just have an EP and a single to go off of, an indicator that the UK trio are experimenters first, urging appeal second. That fearless attitude pays off in the rising tension of “Dnmrk”, an instrumental track that is close to lounge house than lyrical pieces like “Oppella” (the strongest in the EMPSS’ early catalog) and recent single “Down”. By blurring the lines between any of these genre designations, EMPRSS open themselves to creating something unique and respectively groundbreaking. The opposite end is there will some hit and miss moments as their songwriting isn’t willing to compromise to any predictable forms. EMPRSS join European touring partners Hundred Waters and fellow electronic-based artists in the same realm on SXSW Saturday at The North Door.
