EmperorX - Don't Change Color, Kitty - 10,000-Year Earworm to Discourage Settlement Near Nuclear Waste Repositories
So @phoebonica and I were talking about the 99% Invisible podcast, and they suggested that the raycats (cats genetically engineered to change color in the presence of radiation, with folklore spread to hopefully last) mentioned in the episode about warning for radioactivity far into the future was delightfully Night Vale-y. And it so very much is! There should be scruffy little raycats living feral in the sandwastes, and this song should be part of Night Vale oral tradition, and possibly have an associated childrens’ jump-rope, patty-cake, or other chanting-type game associated with it. It belongs in fanfic. Sadly, I am deeply blocked right now. I hope @phoebonica can work it in to something!
Don't change color, kitty.
Don't change color, kitty.
Don't change color, kitty.
Please, 'cause if you do,
or glow your luminescent eyes
we're all gonna have to move.
Don't change color, kitty.
Don't change color, kitty.
and we'll keep you from the cold.
Don't change color, kitty.
we need your kind around.
But the minute you change your looks,
we're bringing you with us out of town.
Don't change color, kitty.
Don't change color, kitty.
I hope you think it's cozy in your travel case,
because it's time to move.
Don't change color, kitty.
Stay that midnight black.
The radiation that the change implies
can kill, and that's a fact.
The radiation, whatever that is,
is something we don't want,
'cause it withers our crops
and it turns our livestock gaunt.
So don't change color, little kitty.
