Listened to these three while working on some leather

Death Grips - Ex Military

Got this tape at a music store, it's a bootleg. Wasn't going to buy but my boyfriend offered to buy it for me (💚💜💚) . I've really enjoyed other Death Grips albums I've heard but I had never gone out of my way to find ex military after it got removed from a bunch of places. Listening to this makes me understand why people talk about them so much. Not that the other albums don't have their own merits, but this is an insane thing to have come out in 2011. You can hear the stuff other people would catch up to later way before they were thinking about it. And it fucking slams.

Eat - Sell me a God

Oddball tape. Pulled it out of a collection that a friend's dad was getting rid of (the rest of which is still gathering dust by my front door waiting for it to find a good donation spot). The collection has been a fun dig, lots of bootleg stuff too, but I'm saving that for a time I feel especially patient. A quick test listen told me some of the recordings are real rough. This is one I pulled purely on cover and name. North London band, 1989. It's got that 90's jam band sort of thing going, where you can tell they aren't taking it seriously and a level of quality to match lol. It was alright, I'll see if I can remember anything about it after tomorrow tho.

Pure Filth - Pure Filth

This one was almost too exactly what I expected. Bought this in a weird little corner store after I got a tattoo downtown, the kind of place that also has a rack of someone's custom altered thrift store clothing and a noticeably large variety of Arizona ice teas. This tape is exactly what it sounds like, intentionally disgusting punk. The music itself is good, I bet if I were 3 lone stars deep at a bar I would love it even more. But man, the lyrics. On the track "Str8 2 Insane" you get "fuck is my favorite word, this whole place is absurd, a big ol bowl full of turds and I'm about to flush". Or just all of the opening track "Piss Bottle". Thankfully there's a lyric sheet so I can confirm what I hear lol. It's doodled up to look like a middle school notebook so might be intentional, but there is this weird political undercurrent to it that feels genuine. feels like one of these people who will be very weirdly neutral anti government sentiment, like they tell you they hate the government and all sides because they're all corrupt, but when you try to drill in on specifics you find someone who has a lot of anger but no real convictions? Very Modern Catcher in the Rye feeling. This tape called me a phony. Looks like the band dropped this and another album close together in 2023 and then I stop seeing anything from them. Oh, and this is apparently tape 42/100 according to the Sharpie on the back.
