As usual, my wife knows just the right question to get me to blather on at length. ;-) I don't really think I can put these in order, though.
Cryptonomicon by Neal Stephenson. I might actually like some of his other books (especially Anathem) better, but Cryptonomicon was one of the books that made me the person I am today. I might not have chosen to be a mathematician if it weren't for this book.
The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson. Easily the best work of epic fantasy that I have ever read, with the greatest worldbuilding I've ever encountered. Also Jasnah might just be the coolest fictional character that I can think of off the top of my head.
The Atrocity Archives by Charles Stross. I don't know how much I need to yell at the internet until people actually start reading Stross, but DAMN IT YOU ALL NEED TO BE READING STROSS. Archives is probably a good place to start, but Halting State and Singularity Sky are both also really really good.
The only nonfiction book that will be on this list: Nudge, by Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein. Basically, the art of organically leading people to make good informed choices, without forcing them into doing anything. If I could send a copy of one book to everyone in Congress, it'd be this one.
ahhhhhh this is so hard. Um. How about graphic novels? Top Ten by Alan Moore and Gene Ha is the best superhero comic I've ever read, and it's not very well known.
That was more or less pulled out of my ass, and if you'd asked me on a different day it might have been five completely different books. XD

A good coercion tactic!  You can also bribe him with the fantastic lady characters, I am sure.  If he ever stalls you should  let me know and I will help bother him back into reading.

EEEYUP. Â There's this one I have that looks incredible in the bottle - shimmers of every cool color from violet to blue-green marbled together and kind of opalescent - but it's impossible to get it to look like that on my actual nails. Â SO FRUSTRATING.
