I believe mainland Australia is generally considered a continent. I remember having this 'is-mainland-Australia-an-island-or-continent' conversation with one of my former director (who is an Australian) and what he said is really interesting: It really depends on whether you want to see it as a small fish in a big pond (smallest continent) or a big fish in a small pond (largest island).
