I saw the Delgados quite a few times in the late nineties and early noughties. I’m sure this wasn’t the first time and it definitely wasn’t the last, but I definitely saw them more times than I have tickets for. Around the time of this gig the band were touring their debut album Domestiques which came out on Chemikal Underground, the label the band formed themselves in to avoid the London based music industry. I could write about how much I loved the label, especially in the early years, but maybe I might do that on one of the anniversaries of me seeing Mogwai, or Arab Strap, or Bis, or Cha Cha Cohen. There will definitely be ample opportunity and as you can see, I was definitely a fan.

The first time I heard The Delgados was on an 8 x 7” compilation album called Disco Sucks, which must have come out in early/mid 1996 but wasn’t released on Chemikal Underground and featured a very eclectic mix of indie bands from Bis to the likes of Merzbow. Can you imagine such a thing these days, given that 7”s are pushing a tenner each now, especially for a bunch of bands who haven’t even had albums out? Anyway, I bought it because it had Bis on it, and The Delgados track I've Only Just Started To Breathe was the other track that really stood out for me, and it was probably the fact that both bands were on the same label that led me to listen the other bands signed to Chemikal Underground.
