Pokemon Card of the Day #1525: Tornadus (Emerging Powers)
Tornadus was pretty typical for legendary Pokemon in the BW era. They had a lot of bulk for Basic Pokemon along with, in most cases, a very usable attack. Being a Colorless-type meant that it was a lot easier for Tornadus to fit into a deck than most Pokemon could, and it was only a matter of time before it would find a good home.
110 HP was impressive for a Basic Pokemon that only gave up a single Prize. Sure, it was still in the range of the likes of Reshiram and Plasma Freeze Kyurem, but there were a lot of attacks Tornadus could take. The Lightning Weakness did come into play if Magnezone or Thundurus EX showed up though Zekrom was still too powerful to care about such things. The big gem in the stats was a Fighting Resistance, which could help Tornadus get into decks that struggled against the likes of Donphan, Terrakion, and Landorus EX since a decent attacker that could actually take a hit from those was very useful. Tornadus also managed to require a single Energy to retreat, which was low enough to not need extra help.
Energy Wheel needed a Colorless Energy to work and simply let you move an Energy from 1 of your Benched Pokemon to Tornadus. Chances to use this were few and far between. It was best to power up your Tornadus in other ways.
Hurricane’s 80 damage was nice, even if not spectacular, for the price of 3 Colorless Energy. You had to move a basic Energy card from Tornadus to 1 of your Benched Pokemon, but that was doable and at least the Energy stayed on the field.
Tornadus wasn’t the most spectacular Pokemon, but there were a lot of Lightning-type decks based around things like Eelektrik and Zekrom. Tornadus could work in those decks since it could use Lightning Energy while also providing an important Fighting-type resistance. As time went on, even Tornadus fell behind compared to options such as Tornadus EX, but there were several months where this card was a common sight in top-level decks. It was a really good back-up to Zekrom.
