One of the things I often get asked is how kids can be less scared of disasters - weather or otherwise. The best answer I have ever been able to give is: "Be Prepared!" Knowing that you will be ready for a tornado, earthquake, etc. gives kids some control over what seems to be an uncontrollable situation.

Packing your emergency backpack
With the advancement of today’s technology we all live comfortably & we often forget that disasters whether natural or man-made can still occur. Just a few months ago Hurricane Sandy devastated parts of the Caribbean and the Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern United States. Having an emergency backpack in these situations can be crucial for the survival of yourself & your family.
The survival rule of 3 tells us that we need 3 essential elements in order for us to survive in every situation, these are: AIR,WATER,SHELTER. We will primarily focus on these elements for our emergency backpack & then proceed onto other elements we might need.
What should you put in your emergency backpack?
1.Backpack
First things first, we need to talk about the actual backpack. It needs to be spacious(to carry all the needed stuff), light(easy to carry around your back for long hours) & durable. When purchasing a backpack make sure that it’s material is durable.
2.Water
Water is the single most important thing here, we can survive without food for considerable period of time depending on the person but Water is the one thing a human body can’t survive without.
So where do we get water in an emergency situation?
I personally carry 3 water bottles in my backpack …..
I also make sure to have a water purification kit or a stove where I can boil un-purified water which can be found basically in every survival environment. This way I can find water in case the water bottles don’t suffice.
3.Shelter
Clothes, shoes & tents fall all under this category. Sheltering yourself from different environmental situations can save you from hypothermia, animal attacks etc..
These are the shelter items I carry in my backpack:
Waterproof hiking shoes
2 pairs of wool socks
2 Changes of underwear
1 Extra pair of pants
1 base thermal underwear
Fleece hat
2 extra shirts
Warm Rain Jacket
1 Heavy Duty military poncho – Can also be used as a tent
Sleeping bag
1 Emergency blanket
4. Fire
It’s always important to know how to start a matchless fire but you should always carry some fire starting items in your backpack. I suggest you carry lighters, waterproof matches & a fire steel which can be used to generate sparks.
5.First Aid
Whether you buy one or you do one yourself here are the essential items:
Gauze dressing
Bandages of different sizes
Alcohol swabs
6.Tools
Here’s where we talk about the knifes. You will need a knife for different chores such as cutting ropes, preparing food, self defense, chopping & more. Try choosing an all-purpose survival knife which is durable & not much longer than 10″. Having a multi-tool such as a Leatherman is really useful in most situations so make sure to put one in your backpack.
7.Lightning
Lightning is good if a blackout occurs or you just have to camp out for the night so I suggest carrying a compact LED flashlight & maybe some candles.
8.Misc stuff
Map
Machete
Cash
Toilet Paper
Packet of AA Batteries
Paracord
Duct Tape
Paper & Pencil
Bar of Soap & Hand Sanitizer
Heavy Duty Garbage Bags(To Collect Water etc…)
P38 can opener
Small Fishing kit
Binoculars
Whistle
Compass
Obviously as time changes, equipment changes but the most important thing is to have the basics so always fill your backpack with the basics first. Remember the survival rule of 3
AIR / WATER / SHELTER
