Eclipse, Prague Castle
A reporter noted family members are “concerned about the conditions” on the ship. “No, they’re not,” the president replied, denying reality.
"The suggestion that the family members of sailors and Marines aboard the USS Lincoln are not concerned about conditions on the ship is genuinely bizarre. There’s no shortage of reporting, from MS NOW and other news organizations, about the extent of these Americans’ fears, especially amid reports about an apparent recent suicide attempt.
Trump, given an opportunity to address those concerns, decided to insist they don’t exist, perhaps because they might reflect poorly on his administration, its tragic judgment or the war he started but doesn’t know how to end. But adding insult to injury was to hear the president — who avoided military service himself during the Vietnam war, citing “bone spurs” — casually make the claim that brutally long deployments haven’t gone “nearly long enough.”
"Quinten Geldhof, also known as @Microhobbyist, put a drop of rainwater under the microscope to show what each drop carries. For a raindrop to form, it needs to condense around tiny particles in the atmosphere called #condensationnuclei. As the droplet falls, it can pick up pollen, fungal spores, smoke particles, and more. If you’re ever tempted to drink rainwater, don’t forget to treat and filter it first!" Museum of Science, Boston

Total Solar Eclipse 2026
Palma de Mallorca, Spain / NASA
ASTRONOMY PICTURE OF THE DAY August 12, 2026 at 05:00PM On August 12th, 2026, the Moon totally eclipsed the Sun and cast its shadow across Siberia, Greenland, Iceland, Spain, and Portugal. Today’s image features two total solar eclipses viewed from Zaragoza, Spain, one over the Cathedral-Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar and the other reflecting in the Ebro River. For a few moments, Spain saw its first major total solar eclipse since 1905. Those witnessing totality may experience a chill in the air, the quieting of birds, the confused chirps of insects, and the shared awe of many. It’s the corona’s time to shine as the Sun’s bright disk is blocked by the Moon. Among other reasons to study eclipses, they help scientists understand why the corona is millions of degrees hotter than the Sun’s surface. Enthusiastic citizens can contribute to these studies by recording how wildlife responds, imaging the corona, and monitoring air temperature and clouds.
