To piggyback off my go to the range post, buy some basic tools.

Get a set of screwdrivers (flathead and phillps at the very least)...

Get a set of wrenches (standard and metric)...

Get a set of sockets (standard and metric), and a ratchet handle...

And actually practice using these tools a few times. The thing about tools are that most of them are not electric. This means that the person using the tool makes the tool work. And as simple as the tools above are, most people nowadays do not understand how much power and skill it takes to twist a piece of metal. It seems simple to turn a screw...until you are turning a screw and it isn't budging. It's far easier to strip a screw than it is to get it to turn. To turn an extremely tight nut (like a lug nut on a tire for example) can take far more power than you actually are used to exerting. Many men do not know how old or out of shape they are until they have to change a tire. It's not JUST knowing how to to the steps. Can you even get the lug nuts off? Or are you too weak? And other types of nuts are just as difficult to remove, especially if they have been outside in the elements...

Owning/using basic tools aren't passed down to the youth anymore, but it can at the very least make your life easier, and in the extreme save your health or your life. Don't let your first time using a tool be the first time you need to use that tool...

Join the hiking/fishing/outdoors/prepper groups, and establish friendships. Then physically go meet these people and hang out a few times. Let them meet you. Be a real person and not just an one of many online personalities to them. So should you ever need them or they ever need you, both of you know that each other is a real person, and a safe person. A single mother/single father has a better chance of getting help and coverage because they have kids, but a single person, male or female, has a very small chance of being brought into the fold, especially if you don't appear to be able to bring tangible benefit. But if you already have a built in network, your chances of provision and coverage increases significantly...

Get you a book on trapping...

Get you a book on hunting...

I will not recommend any particular book, because it doesn't matter the book. As long as you can understand the lessons in the book, it's the right book. If you can find books that are particular to the area/climate you live it, that's even better, because different areas provide different resources, but just get three tangible books that you can have in your home in case you ever need to feed yourself and there is no electricity or ways to access digital information. The books don't have to be that new, as long as it's within the last 30 or so years...
