Amtrak's first day of operations was May 1, 1971. It inherited locomotives and passenger cars from many different railroads. Most of them were not repainted into Amtrak's paint scheme until later. An exception was Penn Central E8 4316, which was painted in this unique paint scheme for Amtrak Day 1.
