Sirens & Scylla as Renaissance emblems
While two tailed sirens as Renaissance emblems is a small category, I'm grouping them all here, along with Scylla. I'll be adding images to this as I find them.
Trio of sirens, Andrea Alciato, 1546.
She's got chicken legs! Two tailed siren from Pierio Valeriano's Hieroglyphica.
Two tailed Scylla, 1615.
Two tailed siren with bird feet. Pierio Valeriano. Hieroglyphica, Sive, De Sacris Aegyptiorvm Aliarvmqve Gentivm Literis Commentarij. Italy, 1575. Internet Archive.
The Hieroglyphica was a popular book of symbols, influenced by hieroglyphics, during the Renaissance. I haven't been able to track down the exact meaning of this siren, though I'm guessing it's a similar warning against lust, like Andrea Alciato's sirens in a popular emblem book. Scylla also is featured in some emblem books.
The bird feet look a little weird. This is likely a way to signal the siren's bird origins, as Homer's sirens had bird bodies.
I found another version of this image, which is likely from an English translation. Unfortunately, it's from Pinterest, and I'm not sure when the book was translated into English, but it does tell us she represents misfortune.

Scylla with two tails. Emblemata, Padua, 1621.
“As far as the hips a woman, with barking monster-pups below, Scylla was two-shaped. The monsters are interpreted as avarice, audacity, plunder. But anyone whose face knows no shame is a Scylla. Via Alciato at Glasgow.
